I've read through your TH400 book a couple of times this year and watched a few video clips of tear downs and rebuilds. If I get the tools I requested as Christmas gifts, I will probably start a rebuild on my TH400, which is actually an ST400, in January or February. I have obtained as much information as I can find on the few items specific to the ST400, but I remain intimidated. I plan to take lots of pictures, even video of my tear down in case I forget which way something was located initially. I may send a photo and a request for advice if I get stuck. I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas.

    Cliff,

    Hope all is well…

Corresponded a couple of years ago on an engine build I was contemplating…took 15 months, but finally got it back from builder.

Anyway, I’m currently hunting for a Dashpot assy. For 67 quadrajet with auto trans.

Any chance you might have one? Or know someone who does?

    Thanks!
    Paul

Should be fine. Lift increases wear so less is good in any engine that will see a lot of street miles.

If the engine isn't going to get but a few hundred miles a year then it really doesn't matter much.....

I’m not sure of which lobe lift or center line to use? I’m thinking this Custom Grind should meet my target goals.
What do you think? Thanks for you advice.

    248/256 @ .050 duration
    614/614 w 1.52 r
    675/675 w 1.65 r
    111 or 112 LSA

I use and prefer wider LSA here for anything that will end up driven on the street. It reduces overlap, improves vacuum at idle, power and performance at light engine load, etc. Tight LSA is strictly done for "menacing" idle quality unless we are talking about cams with over .260 @ .050" duration and full-race stuff. So basically you reach a point with duration where you have to pull the LSA down a bit or you put peak power beyond the "target" or the RPM capabilities of the assembly.....

Thanks for your help Cliff. I don’t understand why Butler would recommended an Extreme Marine Grind, unless it’s just the lobe lift that he was looking for. I think that grind and lift is probably 625 ish on HP. And the 111 LSA? I was thinking 112.

    Lobe 3371/3373
    .380 lobe lift
    .570/.570 w 1.52
    .627/.627 w 1.65

You woln't have trouble making 650hp with that much head flow but at 10.6 to 10.8 the cam needed will not make a lot of vacuum at idle speed.

Good thing is that you have a manual transmission so idle quality isn't as big a deal as with an auto trans car. I'd look at the Road Paver cam from Dave at SD or something in that range. They are around 244/254 @ .050" on a 112LSA. You might fall a tad short on HP but it will make up for it in idle quality and street manners.

We have one here in a 455 (468) with 11.3 to 1 compression (iron heads) and it idles really nice for that much camshaft. Has good street manners as well........
