I had a piece of aluminum flat stock laying around and chopped it down to fit. I shoot through the hole with a depth gage or my vernier and subtract the thickness of the plate...

Barring seeing specific references in Pontiac assembly manuals I would suggest 7-8 o clock for the RH side and similarly 4-5 o clock on the LH side.

That's where we placed the cranks on truck...
