You say the 225/50/16's (24.8") are bigger than your 215/70/15's (26.'8).

But in fact, they are a full 2" SHORTER. That is why they don't rub.

The available space in the front end is different...

After you get the right offset rim and proper sized tires, check you caster and other alignment settings too....
