Jkoontz has the right idea. I did that on my build.Zero decked,.045 off the heads screw in studs.I used hardened washers and it worked nicely.

My 65 389 has about .070 on it. Seems fine. Gears mesh good, clearance is correct.
Seemed a lot at first,but as stated it works fine.
Don't forget the rear brace for the starter.It is important.
