My dads 69 GOAT......
Hey guys, I'm kinda new to the PY forums, but not new to cars. I figured I'd post up a little blog of what I'm doing....let me explain.
Here in the past year I built up an 85 S10 drag truck...700ish HP, glide, backhalf, etc. Ran low 10's, high 9's. Got fed up with the costs and all the BS of going to my local track dud to how far away it is. (over an hour and a half one way) Sold the truck and thought that I'd do something special for my old man. Back in 69 my dad bought a very near new 69 GTO from a local dealer. He got a little help from his dad (my grandfather) by co-sighing for him. He got the car, paid it off, had fun with it, had the motor out doing mods and other BS we all do. Transmission was out at least once every 2 months, etc, etc. Well, in 78 (the year before I was born) he was at work late and driving back home in the pouring rain....it was dark, late, around 2am, raining like hell going about 40, then out of nowhere a Chevy van was stopped in the middle of the road with no lights on....nothing he could do to stop. So the car was totaled and it was sold for scrap. Ever since I have been old enough to know about cars, he always told me about the "Goat" he used to have. From what he (and my mom) told me, it was a 69 GTO, 400/400, Midnight Green with a white vinyl top, parchment interior and non-hideaways. Here in the past 10 years or so, he told me he wanted to get another GTO someday, but the prices were so high that he'd prolly never own a decent one ever again. So after seeing , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS3SvdWcAks it gave me the idea and motivation to do something extra special for my old man. So I came up with the idea of finding a car that would be worth restoring or fixing up....restore it to the specs from what he and my mom told me about it and give this car to him for his birthday as a complete gift from me...title and all. So with the little bit of change I got out of my little drag truck, I'm on a quest to make this "want" my old man has into a reality. Now, this won't be a show car build or a points winning build, but it will be something similar to resto mod.....except for the mod part. Not a frame off or anything as I can't hardly afford what I'm doing now. I want to build the car as close to back to factory as I can, but then again, I don't want to go so far out on it that he has nothing to work on himself....I know he likes fixing and tinkering. That's just one thing I want him to be able to do on his own. I just want this car to be able to go to a local cruise-in and to turn some heads.....not a show car, but somewhere between one and a nice driver. So, I recently picked up a 2 owner 69 "GOAT" for a pretty decent price. Not factory matching numbers, but it is in fairly decent shape for the most part. I bought this car from a craigslist deal and bought it over the phone and had it shipped to me from 1000 miles away....basically sight unseen aside from a few pics and details from the owner. The car has a 15 year old resto on it and it's starting to show it's age. I know it will need plenty of work, and I'm prepared for the most part. So once I tear into it, I'll find out what it really needs vs what I think it needs...... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_0850.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_0852.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_0854.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_0857.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_0864.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_0866.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_0874.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_0876.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_0877.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_0879.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/IMG_0882.jpg |

Looks to have a LeMans deck lid.
|
Nice!!! I wish mine was in that good of shape to start. Cool thing to do for your Dad.
|
Evan, you mean Tempest right?! Hey, I could use that trunk emblem lol.
Kokomo, great story and good luck with your project!! |
That's a great story alright. I know if I were in his shoes, I'd be thrilled with that car AND my son....and I'd want the car just like it is, right now! Looks like a driver to me.

Hey, that green goat you have in your sig....what color is that? Looks to be vedoro. Quote:
Thank you sir! Quote:
Also, this car has been tuned for 6000 feet of air....not 500 where it's at now. It runs pig rich so the carb needs some tuning. Lots of things going to happen to this old goat in a short amount of time (if I can figure out how to fund it) Wish me luck guys! I may very well need it. ~Joe |
Looking forward to seeing this progress. I've always wanted to do the same sort of project for my dad.
|
Good post. It's nice to see a newbie able to post quality pics and info right off the bat.
I think that is a great car and with the family history involved, looks like a keeper. Welcome to PY!! |
welcome aboard. i might have missed it, but what was the color combo of your dads car? options it came with? are you going to paint this one to match his? how does this one compare option wise with his?

HIS CAR: 69 hardtop Goat ~400/400 ~Code 57 Midnight Green metallic/white vinyl top ~Non-hideaways ~Parchment interior ~AM/FM radio ~Non-A/C car ~Non-RA car MY CAR (His car soon) 69 hardtop Goat ~400/400 ~Code 50 Cameo Ivory/black vinyl top ~Hideaways ~Black interior ~Not sure what radio it had (PHS says "Radio P/B") ~Non-A/C car ~Non-RA car So basically it looks like hideaways and the color are the only two differences between the cars. This car will undergo a transformation to be as close to his old car as I can budget wise. The interior will be the last thing I do since a parchment interior conversion will be pretty expensive. I am still on the fence about ditching the hideaways and going non-hideaways....not only for originality (to his old car), but for simplicity and aid in the repair time. ANYONE WANT TO TRADE SETUPS??? I know some of you are screaming at your computer telling me not to change the original color of this car.....keep screaming, it's not gonna change my mind. :biggerGri Also as a something to add to the mix of things, me and my father work together....at an auto parts store of all places. My family has owned and operated a parts house since the 60's....my uncle owns the store (currently 5 stores connected to 40 others) and my old man manages 2 of them. If you want to look them up, search "A-Line Auto Parts". It's going to be hell keeping this from him....he still has absolutely no clue. One good thing about having a parts store is the fact that my uncle (owner) has a bunch of body and paint supplies in one of his stores. He is also on board with me on this project and he committed to donating the materials I will need to make body and paint happen on this car. So that right there alone is prolly a 2K (or better) head start. We carry Valspar if anyone wanted to know.....I have it on my 69 Camaro I built HERE. Also, here is that PHS paper to the goat..... |
Nice looking GTO.:)

Had to smile as I looked at your PHS. My first car was a '68 GTO hardtop originally purchased from Russ Harvey in Iowa Falls. Your car will be great family heirloom! Have fun with it!

Very Cool what you are doing. Welcome to the forum if you have any questions or need advice everyone in here will be more then willing to help out in anyway. Good Luck and have fun.

Well, I got her in the ole dirty garage and started going over what needs to be done. I figure I will start from the front and move back. First thing was to get the front bumper off....... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...9968632304.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...9968811496.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...9969179502.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...9969105423.jpg Ok, car starting to come apart. First thing I noticed was circle cracks in the hood as if a bondo repair was conducted over a hood pin modification.....sure enough, it was what I thought..... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...0915156921.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...0915266512.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...0915305817.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...0915339605.jpg Looks like I have some work ahead of me. :-ohwell: |

Damn! That makes me worried now! Thanks alot!
Now I have a sick feeling in my gut......oh well....I suppose I'll have to deal with it and make it good. |
Well, if your's was that bad, you'd probably be able to feel it. When I bought my car, someone had already 'fixed' it....With expanding foam, fiberglass and bondo.
Right at the last minute, I decided to sand the primer off of the entire car and that's when I found what was underneath...If your's is that bad, you'd probably be better off with another roof rather than patching like I did. Couldn't take any longer and probably easier. Sorry to hijack...got a little carried away with the pics. |
No problem Greg. I like pics...I will call them "examples" of the "could be" ;)
|
(Greg, I got the top stripped, see update below)
Ok guys, it's been a while since I posted, but that does not mean I haven't been working on it. I've come to terms with myself on the go-ahead of replacing both quarters (full 1/4's). When I took the vinyl top trim off, I removed the pot metal trim piece and found a large crack in the paint, I followed it and actually popped out a piece of 1/8th" thick filler that had some galvanized sheet metal underneath. So I started chipping away and found the passenger qharter to have been fixed at least 3 or 4 times (see pics)....it's pretty bad when there is filler in places that's over a 1/2" thick. So, I've actually pulled the car all the way apart...front clip, interior, glass, doors,....everything except the car off the frame and motor/trans out. Once I got it apart, I took it to get a little media blast treatment. I did the floors, the hood, all the spot welds around both quarter panels since they both have to be changed, all around inside the trunk floor, since I will be putting a full trunk floor in, the rockers and the tail panel. I found that it needs the following.... ~Both full quarters, ~Full trunk pan (and some light repair on the inner wheel tubs) ~Right outer rocker ~Both front floor pan patches ~Rear floor pan section (under seat) ~Front lower left fender patch ~and a few small things to patch/fix here and there....should not be a big deal Not too bad really.....especially since this car had been in the rustbelt all it's life, but the one that scared me more than anything is the rust in the upper cowl at the bottom of the windshield. It was better than some I've seen, but I knew there wasn't a panel available. So with that said, I finally sold some stuff around the house and came up with the funds to make this project possible. This week I will be making a 5K+ order from PY and that will include nearly everything to get this thing more than 90% done and in really good condition.....that is, if I don't depend on anyone else doing the work. Here are some pics.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...6964163376.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8218249571.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8218384859.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8218445672.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8218283989.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8218414823.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8218346838.jpg The top didn't look all that bad. It had some pitting, but it wasn't bad. I blasted it with walnut and that took out all the rust, but sadly I didn't get any pics since I had it in a sealer almost as soon as I got back. I knew it was going to rain and be very humid the next day, so I didn't want that surface rust to haunt me later. http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8219211297.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8219246977.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8051332006.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8219278692.jpg |
So, on my 3 day weekend, I went out and started tackling the painstaking lengthy, time consuming task of repairing the upper dash. I spent approx 2 days on it working at it here and there between house duties. I got the upper cowl all finished off, but I'm still working on getting the actual dash repaired.
Some pics .... After removing the upper dash, this is what I started out with.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8219323715.jpg Took about 3 hours (just on the drivers side) of cutting, fitting, grinding and welding 18 gauge sheet metal, but it turned out pretty good I think.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8179008492.jpg Now, the pass side was a different story. It was alot worse. There were places that were completely rotted away, so most of that had to be all rebuilt.... Started with this.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8178902578.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8260404372.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8260488675.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8260534241.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8260565547.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8260595367.jpg And after fixing all that junk on the lower cowl..... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8260627642.jpg I had the upper cowl to contend with. Was pretty tricky, but I managed.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8260660190.jpg So, this is what I have to fix next...... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8260698363.jpg Got this much done, and I was tired...... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...8260730737.jpg To be continued........................... |
Wow....that is the thickest bondo I've ever seen on that left quarter. Looks like they just tried to 'carve' a GTO.
You've got your work cut out for you but it looks like it's in good hands. Nice work so far. |
Quote:
Ok, so the upper cowl/dash is done! I figure I have around 8 to 10 hours in it. Was a lengthy job, but I think it turned out well..... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...9386393302.jpg |
Looking Good. Noticed you removed vin tag. Any worry about right rivets to put back? I know when back in place a small plastic trim covers the rivets, but do you worry that anyone will question it?
|
Quote:
I figured someone would be all over that. Yes, I did take it off, yes I took it off for restoration, yes I own this car with a title in my hand and in my name, yes I have the correct rivets, and no I don't think anyone will have any reason to question the accountability of the VIN tag as it matches the frame and the body stamp. No worries anyway.....I will never sell this car. :D |

Great story and great work so far. |
Thanks 68 DT.
Ok guys, time for a little update. I finally got in all my parts from PY. Took a little longer than expected, but it's here and I have a ton of stuff to do. As of now, I have about 90% of everything to get this car back together. First things first.... gotta tackle the drivers side 1/4 panel. What a mess that was. Right away, I realized that the previous work that had been done was an 80% 1/4 skin. This skin, when installed requires the removal of the last 12" or so of the rocker panel for correct fit. The actual panel goes all the way to the bottom of the rocker panel. This is something I did not realize or catch before I ordered parts. So that being said, and I didn't have a drivers side rocker and I was going to replace the pass side anyway (I had the parts) I managed to find a section of rocker on the pass side that was not rotted, cut it out and fabbed it in on the drivers side. Seems to work fine for me. I also had to wait a day for a pair of outer fender wells to come in....I forgot to order them. After the outer fender install, I attempted to fit the full 1/4 panel. After about a dozen on & off's for fitting, the Dii 1/4 seems to fit pretty good. Not nearly as bad as I was thinking. The worst place was in the upper rear window....was not even close to matching (I didn't think to take a pic), so after about an hour of fiddling with it, I decided to remove that portion from the original 1/4 I removed and fab it in....and it was a great success! I even took the time to weld in metal over the roof/1/4 seam so I don't have to worry about using the awful expensive fiber filler. Now it needs just a small skim coat and she be done! So as of now, I have about 10 to 12 hours in the 1/4 panel install....and all window trim fits nicely. I hope the other side goes as good. Some pics...... Missing rocker portion.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...2411848632.jpg Removed from pass side.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...2411812440.jpg Fabbed in on drivers side.....(not cut for length until 1/4 installed) http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...2411918353.jpg New Dii 1/4.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...2411647957.jpg Lead seam.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1054.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1055.jpg After a quick torching..... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1056.jpg Old, porly/mis installed pile of crapppp removed........ http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1058.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...2411707362.jpg After a little fitting here and there.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...2412081522.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...2412121075.jpg She starts lookin' good...... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1064.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1065.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1066.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1069.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1070.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1078.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1079.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1082.jpg |

Ok guys, another update is due. I finally managed to get that damn 68 Camaro out of my hair. took nearly twice as long as I thought would. Anyway, I finally got the pass side 1/4 yanked off and the new one all welded up. Also replaced the outer rocker panel, outer wheel well, and deck filler panel. Was a hell of a time fitting this 1/4. It seemed to fit physically better than the drivers side, but the biggest problem was the upper portion where the 1/4 and roof come together. The Dii 1/4 fits well in most places, but this area is a place that they really need to work on....it fit almost the same way on both sides. This time I took pics. There would be so much work to do to make it fit, so to save some time, I cut off the piece I needed from the original 1/4 and fabbed it in. Still had a ton of time and labor in it, but it is what it is. Alot of time was also put towards the trunk lid fit. Made absolutely sure the trunk lid and 1/4's line up evenly and flat....I hope this things looks good with the trim on it.
So the next thing on the list is to get the body off the frame and commence phase 2 which is to get the trunk pan replaced and do a little work on the floor to inner rockers. Pix....... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1088.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1097.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1094.jpg You can see the piss-poor job someone did replacing the deck panel at one point. Prolly the same dude that put 2 gallons of filler in the drivers 1/4 panel..... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1099.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1100.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1101.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1104.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1112.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1120.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1118.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1119.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1123.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1124.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1128.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1129.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1131.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1132.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1134.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1136.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1137.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1138.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1139.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1144.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1146.jpg To be continued..... |

Nice work, it's going to be a nice car when you get done with it. That previous work on the rear filler panel was something else.

OK, so I managed to get the body off the chassis....just took me and my wife with the use of an engine hoist and an engine sling. Took a cutting torch and cut the trunk floor pan out. Once that was done I realized how much work needed to be done. So with a little enthusiasm, the work began. Great build. The trunk has to be the biggest pain in the butt.
Keep her going. |

Ok, I had an almost 3 full day weekend to do nothing but perform solid work on the ole goat. Most of which, I took full advantage of. I really kicked around the idea of not using a rotisserie, but I'm glad I went ahead and got one. One of the best hands I have ever used. With that said, it helped me tackle the rear floor pan. The entire rear floor pan did not really need to come out....just the rear pass side needed some patching, but once I was able to visually see how much rot was there, I decided to pull the entire rear pan and fix the rust since I had the parts. The rear floor pan brace was the worst part. There was alot of rot on the inner rocker panel as well, so I addressed that too. Installed the new pan and rear brace.....looks damn good if I say so myself. Pictures really don't do this justice as there is so much underneath that you can't see, but here are the pix anyway...... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1158.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1159.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1160.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1161.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1162.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1163.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1165.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1167.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1168.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1169.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1170.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1171.jpg More to come....... |
Ok, it's been one hellova long week. Working 12 hour days and then working 4~5 hours on this car per night can really wear a guy out. Regardless, I made alot of progress. I'm thinking I got about 98% of all the rust removed from this car. The other 2% is basic normal surface rust here and there. I managed to get the rear floor pan done as noted in my last update, but this week I got both front floor pan patches done. Those 2 were the single easiest things to do on this car so far. The rotisserie made it a breeze.
Once all/most of the metal work was done, I spent the next few evenings scraping and grinding off all the grease, grime, road dirt, sticky asphalt someone drove thru at one point, and surface rust and anything on the belly of the car so I could get it ready for a nice coat of POR-15. Once that was done I had to clean all surfaces with thinner/alcohol, then went over all body seams inside and out with 3M seam sealer, then laid down 2 nice thick coats of rust preventative (POR-15).....man it looks great! http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...7167076903.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...7167237944.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...7167153444.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...7167327980.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...7167402223.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...7167364920.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...7167559258.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...7167598046.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...7167482579.jpg |

Ok gents, a small update. Got some good progress done this week. Once I got the belly of the Goat POR15'd, I got er off the rotisserie, set her down on the floor and commenced work on the chassis. The ole frame was in pretty good shape other than a couple places where the body mounts....found some rust issues there, but it was a very quick fix. Spent a few days pulling things apart and scraping any dirt/grease off the frame and getting ready for more POR15. I didn't take any before pics, but I did manage to get a few after's. Once done, the body went on the frame with all new bushings, bolts and washers. Also, today I spent the day cleaning up the ole 400. I prolly would have left it alone, but the previous owner painted it FORD blue. I honestly wanted the throw up when I looked at it, so I had to make the change....and I'm glad I did. She's gonna look great!!! http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1188.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1191.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1194.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1197.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1198.jpg Sadly, I did not get any pics of the body on the frame...my batteries croaked and when I got new ones, I forgot to snap a few. I'll get to that later I'm sure. Motor before with FORD BLUE :gag: http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1199.jpg About 8 hours later... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1234.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1235.jpg On a side note, I found the transmission in this car is the born with trans. Found the numbers on the pass side of the trans.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1201.jpg Which match the VIN#.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1224.jpg Sadly, the engine is not numbers matching. Sux, but at least I have a good running mill. Not real sure of how to decipher what year it is or what it came out of. I took a pic of every casting number/stamp on it, can someone help me? Also, found this on the rear left outside of the frame.... http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...O/IMG_1222.jpg I was not able to locate a VIN# stamped on the top of the frame anywhere in this location. Seems I read that not all frames were stamped??? I'm absolutely sure the frame is original since, #1, it looked like the body had never been off the frame, and #2, the frame dates (July 22nd of 1968) seems to be the appropriate date to the VIN# of the car (oo140)....very early build number. Cool stuff. Anyway, like always, more to come! Thanks for checkin' my old junk out! ~Joe |
Isn't that engine color a '72 up color? '69s are supposed to be silver blue.
