Dash Removal

Over the years there’s been questions on how to pull a dash out of a ’70-2 A-body (LeMans/GTO).
PB posted a while ago in a thread here about a ’72 dash removal. www.forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=521401 I’ve modified it for a ’70 w/o A/C with pictures. Vehicle was built in June at the Pontiac plant. Step 1 – Make sure battery is disconnected whenever working around electrical wiring. On each outer corner of the dash, seen from the underneath, there is a bolt w/captive washer. Remove these using a 1/2" socket. Step 2 - Open the glove box door and remove the eight phillips head screws and remove liner. Door is held in by two more screws and a rubber stopper on the hinge arm, remove all to extract door. |

Step 3 - Look up inside where you just removed the glove box parts. Unhook door light wire (white) and remove glove box light wire. There are three studs with a 3/8" speed nut on them, loosen them (you don't have to remove them as it is slotted and dash will slide out of position later).

Step 4 - Remove radio knobs (not pictured) if one is there, a 5/8" socket removes shaft nuts. A 3/8” socket removes bolt from bracket (not pictured). Remove radio, unplugging wires and antenna cable. You may have to remove the whole bracket connected to heater controls, but a phillips head screw under dash has to be removed, upper bolt is a 5/16” socket. Remove the four 3/8" nuts from the backside of the heater control that holds it to the backside of dash. Move unit off of studs, you don't have to undo any of the lines.

Step 5 - Remove the phillips head screws inside of the upper part of the three instrument pod holes, using a stubby phillips screwdriver.
Step 6 - Reach up and push the tab on the bottom of the speedometer unit where it attaches to the cluster and remove speedometer cable from the instrument cluster. Step 7 - Remove ash tray. Remove lower dash panel surround by removing the four phillips head screws. Step 8 - Pull out the headlight knob all the way. Don't yank it! There is a little button you need to push from the backside to release the knob. You probably won't be able to see it, but you will just have to feel around for it. Push it in to release the knob. Remove it. Pull flasher unit off holder. |

Step 9 - Remove two 9/16" nuts on either side of the steering column and lower column. Let wheel rest on seat if seat is installed, if no seat get something to support column, it won't reach floor boards. Remove two 1/2" bolts on either side of the column at the base of the dash.

Step 10 - Now you are ready to pull dash away from the firewall. When you pull away, it will still be attached by the wiring harness. Pull the top of the dash away and remove the two ¼” nuts on top that attach to the instrument cluster. Unplug cluster connector, cigar power wire and light. Unplug headlight and wiper connectors.
You should have everything free to remove the dash. It may ride up the steering column and hang up there, so watch for that. |

Thanks Held for Ransom! After doing pre-war street rods for 30 years, I wanted a nice cruiser. My '70 GTO is a whole new learning experience for me and your detailed post with pictures was a life saver. Not only did you show me what to look for and how to do it right, but your post also allowed me to see what the PO did and didn't do right during his ownership.
There were a number of fasteners left out (explains the dash "squeaks and rattles") as well as lighting ground issues. I ended up replacing the entire dash harness, which was original and crispy, as well as the missing mounting hardware. All is good now. Thanks for making the work as easy as possible. |
Thanks. It was suppose to compliment the console removal thread, but since there were other instructions out there I just held off.
