Brand New 78 Trans Am with 60 original miles

Took some pics: http://imgur.com/a/b2p9y

The original owner bought the car from the dealer lot, drove it home, and wrapped it up until my buddy picked it up with another Trans Am and a stash of NOS pontiac parts a few months ago.

Everything is picture perfect, and even included all the little tags when you first bring it home. The front brake rotors still had the original scratches, the underbody was perfect - no dirt.

This weekend its getting loaded on a carrier and heading to the west coast.

Well that's pretty amazing. Looks to be a W72/WS6 car as well. Nice find!

That's a nice find, thanks for sharing.

Back in the day, I watched them assemble Firebirds and Camaros a few times at the Norwood, Ohio plant. I worked for a vendor at the time.

It's my understanding (I asked) that the workers put a dab of spray paint here and there on the underbody to let workers further down the line know some assembly or another had been torqued, screwed down tight, etc.

Thanks for taking those pics, very cool car! http://www.smilieshq.com/smilies/happy0001.gif

A couple years ago at the TA Nats, there was a Martinique Blue 1978 Trans Am WS6 with 76 miles on the odometer. Still had the plastic on the seats, had never been touched. I took a lot of detailed pics of that car.

Wow, amazing find. How did you guys find it?

Did the original owner start it, either regularly or otherwise, or did it just sit?

Does the car start and run now, or is this/was this a museum piece?

In either case very cool.

Just wondering what one finds in this kind if situation. I am guessing if it is to be driven, it will need a lot of the rubber parts replaced, or no?

For years, I have thought it would be so cool to buy a car and sock it away like this for years, if I had the means. Hence all the questions...

My buddy owns a body shop in the area, and has a collection of classic cars (mostly MOPARs). One of his friends got wind of this find and let him know, he went out to PA and bought it. From what I know, the car has sat all this time. They flushed the old gas. The engine runs and sounds good (they were running it while I was there), but it seems the diaphragm in the fuel pump has disintegrated, as its not pulling gas from the tank.

I hope the guy who bought it will drive it. It begs to be driven.

Very cool,thanks for that!

INFILTRATOR 06-20-2014 10:53 PM

cool. Why no hood bird?? is that a special order?

highway star 06-20-2014 10:56 PM

Amazing find! Great for reference. My '78 was a garage find with 12k mi., all OEM too.
Though I don't remember the diff. cover being that shiney, this one still has the tag at 5 o'clock which is kinda rare. Would like to see what's in the trunk, ie. space saver & bottle. Norwood or Van Nuys?

If you start driving that car, I'd be willing to bet it's going to start leaking from all over the place. 30 years of no use takes it's toll on seals.

The hood bird was always an option on Trans Am's between 1973-1981. The exceptions were the 1976-1981 Special Edition cars, 1980-1981 Pace Cars, and the 1979 10th Anniversary, where the hood bird was part of the package.

David Holmberg 06-21-2014 12:27 AM

^ Skip Fix's 78 TA never had a bird either.

David Jones 06-21-2014 07:30 AM

Nice time capsule.
Now what? A car you can't drive.

There are a few things here......but I will not ruin the story. Its a GREAT FIND. I know of a 77 and a 79 both with less than 6,000 miles on them. I have known them since new so I do know that they are untouched..

The Boss 06-21-2014 06:16 PM

No burnout? :noidea:

Cool car but too nice for me!

marxjunk 06-21-2014 06:24 PM

there a silver anniversary sitting in a show room in Corydon Indiana at a dealership that closed in the 80s...the family still owns the dealership and now its some kind of parts store,,, with less that 2,000 miles..i knew at one time but cant remember now...... Just like the collector Vette..many people speculated on them and the T/As bought them and in the garages they went never to see daylight....MANY are surfacing, its not as rare as ya think..its just car guys only hear about it when another car guy gets it..

Looking at a time capsule car..you see so much wrong with them as far as fit and finish..it doesnt take long to understand why cars that get restored are way over-restored

cool story..
