Decoding Can Am T400 & Safe-T-Track

Anyone know a source for decoding 1977 turbo 400 transmissions and Safe-T-Track rear ends?

My engine is confirmed numbers matching, but not the trans & rear. I've gotten the #s of of each, just need a source for decoding.

Sorry if the answer is obvious, new to Pontiac....
Thanks mucho!

I found what I needed on the transmission. However the rear axle code looks different from what I've been able to find. Here's the axle stamping;

AB K7 - 117

Looks incomplete and doesn't match the decoding I've found on the web. Any help would be appreciated. There are other numbers on the differential housing, including "K8", "7 D/26" and "1253741"

Thanks! Looks like AB code was only used in 1977, so "probably" numbers matching. I still can't find a decoding of the stampings that matches what I have here. Guessing K7 is Canada plant, 1977 and 117 is the day. But, the cowl tag build date is 3C (3rd week of March), so the 117 would be a few weeks after that????

I'd say the date is around April 26?
Your other numbers;
Quote:

"K8", "7 D/26" and "1253741"

I would think the 7 D/26 is the cast date of the center section piece?
K8 possibly the line it was built on at GM of Canada plant?
(would have to go look at my info for sure)

Not sure when the Can Am started production, but it possibly was held up for some reason and the axle is original?
Think they had problems with the rear spoiler production?

Good info! K7-117 (axle) & 7D26 (differential) are within one day of each other, so that makes sense. The AB code (2.56) and the build date variance tell me it is not the original "numbers-matching" rear end, but a correct 1977 unit for the car (correct would be code AR, or AT (3.23).

Car is not 100% original otherwise, so outside of the matching numbers engine/heads, anything else would be a bonus, IMHO. I'm actually pretty damn happy that the trans was updated to a 200R4 :Peace:

Thanks for the great reference site & info on these cars!
