racerboy's 1967 GTO update

As some of you know, I was just starting the resto on my 1967 GTO back in the summer of 2013, when the fellow who worked on my Judge with me for the five previous years unexpectedly passed away. I wound up shipping the car down south to Barr's Restorations in NC to have them finish the car. I haven't been posting here too much since then, but now that the car is getting close to being painted, I thought I'd share some photos from the shop, and will also post some shots of my 400 HO build.

As bit of history on the car-
1967 GTO
400 HO
M-20 4-spd
3.55 posi
Regimental Red
Red interior

I bought this car as a present to myself on my 31st birthday (12/07/1998). Bought it from the second owner up in CT. Car had 58,000 original miles on it. Engine was all original, except the carb had been replaced with a rebuilt at some point. The car had been repainted with lacquer at one point. I bought it out of Hemmings and paid $11,500 for it, which was crazy money (I thought) for a 1967 GTO back then, but it was in such nice shape. For first couple of years, I just took it to car shows and cruise nights. In 2002, the rear main seal was leaking pretty bad, so I pulled the 400 HO out and replaced it with a 428 (my favorite Pontiac engine thanks to Yoda!). That engine is still in the car (or on a stand) in NC now. The 400 HO has been rebuilt and I plan on driving the engine down to NC to install in car prior to reassembly.

So that's a bit of the back story. Will update this thread with pictures and details. I'm hoping that the car comes home sometime in June-July of this year.

Thanks
Frank

Here are some shots of the car being shipped down to NC, and some of the work done at the shop:

How you doing Frank? Good to see you back!

racerboy 02-13-2015 10:39 AM

Hey Chris!
Thanks for the 'welcome back'! I haven't been posting much because for the last year or so I've been living in hotels and airports. That's all changed, and want to get back into the hobby! Everything's good on my end. Since my GTO is out of my reach, I have been working in a 1978 Ford F250 for the past year. I'm hoping to finish that in time to drive to NC to trailer my GTO home.

Feels good to be back in the Pontiac loop!

Frank

Just finished a Regimental Red with a black interior. The mother bought the car new and the son has it now. That color really pops.

Cool.

Does anyone have a shot of the timing cover for a '67? Did it use studs to hold it to the block or bolts or both?

Racerboy
Do you still have the iris mist 65 gto 4-speed?
I don't remember if i sold it to you, or you bought it later.
Welcome back and good luck wi the 67.

I had that car before I got hurt, back in 2006-2007 if I recall. It was an auto that I converted to 4-speed and added a tripower. I sold it to someone out in CA.

Looks good Frank. They'll sure see you coming with the red on red. ;) :D

One suggestion. Solder in a drain tubes for that bottom back window channel. One in each side corner. You can use short lengths of copper tubing and run rubber hoses down and outside to drain off water that will collect in there from washing the car or getting caught out in the rain. It one place that will start rusting and you'll never even know it.

Thanks Gary!

Was a nice car. Wish I still had it. How many times do we all say that? :)

How many of the head bolts had studs on them and what were the lengths (for 1967 400)? I have the right number of head bolts, with the correct markings, none of them have the stud on them, so it's clearly a set from multiple engines. I see that vendors now sell the individual bolts.

Thanks!

I think I answered my own question. It looks like for a non-A/C HO car, I just need one threaded stud for the negative battery cable.

Goes in between front & middle exhaust port on LH head.

Let us know what else you need.

Nice car! Looks like Steve's shop is taking good care of it. Bet you can't wait to have it back with the orginal motor installed - just like new only better. Keep the photos coming.

Studs in the top two locations, bolts in the bottom 4. Picture from an original 67 8 bolt timing cover, 400 block. Studs also hold waterpump and divider plates for alignment during install.
