So I`m Confused Again

I`m trying to figure out when Pontiac started using the fuel filter bracket that attaches to the thermostat housing stud on a 67 GTO???
Ames catalogue states it was introduced mid year???

Also when did the fuel pump's change from the 1st design without the provision for the vapor line to the 2nd design that had the provision on the pump for the vapor line???

Thanks KC

Ames is wrong . My 67 was built November 1966 and has the fuel filter set up your talking about. I wish I could find me a original bracket .

Don't know if it helps but my 09B built '67 LeMans has a single fuel line. It's 326 powered with no A/C. My '67 GTO 4 speed A/C car has the fuel pump with the built in vapor return fitting and it was built on 06B.

True, the Ames information has it “backwards” on the N142AK fuel filter bracket.

This (not user friendly) bracket was factory installed on at least the First 6 months of ‘67 production.

I did a lot of research on this PITA bracket 30+ years ago.
I discovered from owning and viewing Original ‘67 GTO’s that this fuel filter bracket was a mid-year change.
Some factory’s may differ by a month?

I always referred to those early builds as the (3 line) set-up.

1) Main fuel line from pump to filter inlet.
2) Vapor return line.
3) Short hook line, filter outlet to carb.

Sometime after the mid-year mark Pontiac switched to the single fuel line for the Q-jet which continued for several more years.

Here are a couple Survivors with their data plate dates and the (3 line) set-up.
The first car is missing it’s bracket.
The second car still has it’s bracket.

My '67 Fremont build 02C had the fuel pump vapor return as did my other Fremont build 05B GTO.

Thanks for the responses.

So on a late build 67 GTO with the single fuel line to the carb the vapor line was run to the fuel pump correct? ( 2nd design fuel pump)

But what about a fuel filter? They just used the stone filter in the front inlet of the carb?

Thanks KC

All I remember was the sintered brass filter inside the carb inlet with a one-piece tube between pump and carb.

Did the cars with the Blue fuel Filter mounted on the manifold come with a brass filter in the carb from the factory? If they did I wonder if you’d get some better performance if you eliminated that brass filter and just run the blue filter only .

KC,

Shown below is the Factory stock fuel pump off a low mile ‘67 Survivor owned by a member here.
This car is a very late build out of the Fremont plant.

It only has the single fuel line from pump to Q-jet.
The strainer (filter) is located inside, at the front of carb inlet.

When I had a mild 455 in the 67 GTO cruiser, just removing the in-carb filter and going to an inline filter in front of the carb was enough to remove the fuel starvation at the top of second gear. Very unscientific, car nosed over at top of second and we stopped and removed the bronze filter and took it right back out and it didn't nose over after that. Small 5/16" line from tank and old mechanical pump, but in this case removing the filter helped.

Very unscientific, car nosed over at top of second and after taking out the bronze filter and installing an inline large filter the nose-over went away.

My Dec. '66 Baltimore-built '67 GTO has the HD cooling and has the three-line filter mounted to the T-stat bracket. The 1/4" steel vapor return line runs from the filter down along the timing cover and connects to the vapor return line in the frame. The fuel pump is the normal 2-outlet pump.

No biggie here But I’m stoked

I finally found a original fuel filter bracket in amazing shape . I soaked it in evaporust For three hours and it’s mint!
1st pic is what it came off . A 1967 lemans
2nd and 3rd pic now on my car
4th pic is what was on my car when I bought it . You can see the round portion broke off and someone used a hose clamp to secure the filter the bracket

Congratulations!

I know you have been on the hunt for some time on that hard to find 6 month +/- bracket.

Trying to locate factory correct components is a challenge, but worth the reward.

Don’t cut yourself on that thingy.

Chris.
