Mid year '77 switches went to the doors. The previous to 1977 2nd gens had the power door lock switch on the dash.

That's not a switch, just a decal...

Unless you find NOS, you won't find any with lettering. No different to the other dash switches, even the neat ones are worn off. Many years ago I replaces lettering using model transfers and then clear coated. Looked tons better than what it was before, and prior to any of these stickers being available.

thats not true... ive had a few dash mounted door lock & amp boost switches with letters still ok & have had many defrost switches with nice letters & have a few now with excellent letters. probably has a lot to do with where these cars lived most their life & mileage, here in the upper midwest we dont get the sun baked interiors as bad as down south or out west.

But are you selling them? I didn't say they don't exist, they are being held onto.

yes i would sell the defrost switches i have... & i did sell the lock & amp switches i had recently. you said that unless you find NOS you wont find any with lettering... no mention of being held onto.

i agree the dash mounted door lock switches are hard to find because they were not made for very long, but there are used ones out there with lettering if you're patient & keep looking.

On my 80 T/A I was cleaning the dash & smeared some of the printing on the audio boost switch. Couldn't believe how easy It happened. I don't recall what I used, something like windex or maybe just cleaning wipes. too many years ago to remember that part.

On my other cars they have the defrost switch & are all worn. Or maybe wiped away if they are like my 80.

I wonder if a vinyl graphics shop couldn't make a similar font & size to put on the switch faces? I would think that would look better than a complete overlay?

weird that the say "off" I never realized that before.

I usually unlock my doors. Never thought of it as turning them "off" :D

I have a 1976 Firebird that I am putting power door locks on and I gave up on finding a dash mounted switch. I ordered some repo switches from Ecklers and put them in the door panel like the mid 77 and later cars.

anyone have pictures of an original setup? Just curious what it looked like.

A restored version using labels in a '77.

I get nice ones from time to time, not for the squeamish though. Anything cheesy on the dash looks bad. Decals are great if your cheap.

Aus78Formula 08-01-2020 09:09 AM

I think it's more a case of decals being just fine on switches that are already worn and then keep an eye out for an good original to show up.

Aus78Formula 08-01-2020 09:28 PM

Yes, the Lock vs Off labeling isn't the clearest but imagine it may be easier to read quickly than Lock and Unlock where part of the word is obscured by the knob at times. I guess you just need to imagine one way turns the high tech door security on, and the other...ok, you know how door locks work!

Does the lever knob just pull off to apply the decal?

they are very hard to get off,i use a rag to protect it from the pliers i use to remove it.I had to rebuild my a\c heater controls and had to pull 3 knobs off, they were just as hard to get off.
