1970 passenger side mirror (glass)

I am looking for a February or March dated passenger side mirror glass for my car.

I currently have a February dated drivers side glass;
My acquired drivers side is: 2-DMI-0

The current passenger side that I have is dated August, so it's probably more appropriate for an early 1971 model year car;
I am willing to trade this one against a correct one for me, but if I cannot find one more correct, I will be keeping this one.

My desired passenger side mirror would read either:
2-DMI-0
or
3-DMI-0

Also any leads or ebay links would be appreciated.

Thanks for looking and keeping me in mind!

I have a decent stash of scratch free or minimal scratched driver and passenger side door glasses. How do you break down the date code? Since the second gen Firebirds ran from 1970 to 1982, I'm guessing the 0 is for 1970. How do you break down the rest of the code?

unruhjonny 01-06-2020 11:01 AM

the breakdown goes like this:
infront of "DMI" is the month of manufacture;
behind "DMI" is the year of manufacture.

I believe that later in the second gen run (maybe during or after 1979) the date code disappeared, as I have seen some with the "object in mirror" stencil do not have date codes.

Also, I am unsure of when the "object in mirror" first showed up, but I know that it wasn't there on original 70-73 mirrors - I'd guess it showed up somewhere around 1975-1977.

I cold try to get a photo, but this is a detail that is quite tough to get in a photo.

Hopefully this helps :)

Since there is some obvious knowledge on mirror glass here, I’m gonna ask a quick question. It seems as though the mirror’s glass can be changed (or you would likely be looking for a whole mirror), so is there any way to stop my passenger glass from vibrating noticeably. If so, how?

... actually I just looked at it and the bullet shaped head wobbles where it is connected to the pedestal. Also, mine has 8-DCA-4 at bottom below “OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR” so it appears that 1975 would be more likely to be the beginning of those words.

I totally misread your original post. I thought you were talking about door glasses. Back in the day it seemed the door glasses from most higher mileage cars had scratches from the window felt in them. I started saving good door glass. Are those date coded as well?

i think they are, but i haven't yet even looked at that rabbit-hole ;)

thanks for that!
I have one which is a 1979 calender year, and another that has no date.
And yes, I am aware that just the glass can be changed, but am unaware if they are anything other than generic...
if the mechanism that holds the glass gets loose, I am unaware of any way to fix that...

ladytata 01-06-2020 09:55 PM

Door glass is dated, but you need a code sheet

unruhjonny 01-07-2020 03:12 PM

/\/\ thanks!!

I just found this:

https://www.rickscamaros.com/assets/...SDATECODES.pdf

I'm going to look into what I have...
I am pretty sure I replaced my car's original windshield in 1996.

I'm going to bump this thread, and try to bring it back on track;

lookig for a pre-june 1970 passenger side mirror;
I have one dated August 1070 (8-DMI-0) that I am willing to trade against it.

unruhjonny 02-20-2020 03:54 PM

egads my typing can be horrendous - Sorry for the mis-spellings!

To clarify that jumbled mess:

I am looking for a date correct passenger side mirror(glass) for my car which was built the first week of June.

I currently have a 2-DMI-0 drivers side mirror that I had planned on using.

I am quite willing to buy a correct passenger mirror outright (at the right price of course), but I also have as possible trade bait the following door mirrors:
  • spare drivers: 12-DMI-9 (?December 1969)
  • spare passenger 1: 8-DMI-0 (August 1970)
  • I also have (I believe) two later date coded passenger mirrors as well as spare drivers and passenger mirror housings.

I just came across this:

LINK

If these are available as repops, I am open to that too;
I am doubting right now that this is the correct style glass that I need... but I will look into it.

I'm giving this a two month bump.

Still looking for a better suited good passenger side mirror.

The following date codes are what I am looking for, listed in order of preference

1) 2-DMI-0
2) 1-DMI-0 or 3-DMI-0
3) 12-DMI-0 or 4-DMI-0 or 5-DMI-0

Thanks for looking :)

A member just reached out to me with the possibility of ending my search on this part;
I looked up this thread and saw I made a small typo (underlined below);

I'm hopeful that this is my final bump, but incase a deal is not made, a bump is worth while none the less.

I'm looking for a better suited good passenger side mirror for my car based on my build date, and the correct drivers side mirror(s) I already have.

The following date codes are what I am looking for, listed in order of preference

1) 2-DMI-0
2) 1-DMI-0 or 3-DMI-0
3) 12-DMI-9 or 4-DMI-0 or 5-DMI-0

Thanks for humouring me :D

I just acquired in hand a June 1970 dated mirror.
This is a bit too new for my car, but unless anyone messages me with a better offer, I will consider my search for this item to be over for now.

If anyone has an earlier one, preferably a February or March date, I'd be willing to trade this, but otherwise this is it for me for now.

There seems to be at least three different side view mirror glass. The early cars are date coded. My '74 (which I am sure is original) had plain glass on both sides, no date codes or any other markings. The later cars have the "object in mirror". Not sure the start of each.

unruhjonny 02-01-2021 05:44 PM

all factory mirrors or glass of any sort had a date code.
replacement mirrors bought at a glass shops did not have date codes.

Looking for parts can be a funny thing;
You can look and look for what seems to be ages, and come up with nothing, then bam(!), you find one, followed by another... which is what has now happened to me.

I just purchased (not yet shipped) a passenger side December 1969 mirror;
I guess I will change my plans, and reinstall the drivers side mirror that has always been on my car.

Drivers side: 12-DMI-9 (December 1969; this is the one that was always on my car)
Passenger side: 12-DMI-9 (December 1969; not yet received)

Now my spares are:
Drivers side: 2-DMI-0 (February 1970)
Passenger side 1: 6-DMI-0 (June 1970, it's there, but I wasn't pleased with the glass)
Passenger side 2: 8-DMI-0 (August 1970; nice glass, with only minor markings)

This is the best image of my August and June mirrors that I was able to capture to try to get the issues with my June dated glass;
The June mirror is in the white housing;
The August mirror is in the brown-ish housing:

https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1614266417

What appears to be a fuzziness on the white mirrors glass is actually little black cavities in the mirror face(!?) - you can feel it with your nails.

Ok, I'm REALLY done looking now... (knocks on wood)
