Okay SD gurus.......... Does the pcv valve on the SDs work well given the fact that it basically lays horizontal as opposed to the standard Pointiac fare where it sits vertical in the grommet in the valley pan? Or is the PCV valve a differenct part number. It seems to me that laying flat the PCV has no resistance either way when lying flat.

I can't speak for the 1974 cars but I do now they work in the horizontal position on the 73 cars. I have noticed no carry over when pulling the line off the carb and I figure its due to low vacuum or not enough air born material to be conveyed. The 73 version is re-poped by someone on epay who charges 250.00 each for the oil cap assembly. |
The PCV valve functions the same, vertical or horizontal.
Engine vacuum pulls the inner part of the valve closed, letting a restricted amount of crankcase vapor enter the intake manifold. When vacuum drops, the valve opens allowing a higher, unrestricted volume of vapors to pass through the valve. All Pontiac PCV valves are connected with a hose to a fitting on the intake manifold, not the carburetor 73 and 74 SD-455 PCV valves are the same, with the valve connected to the rocker cover cap by a curved hose. This was an attempt to reduce oil consumption in the SD engines. The SD-455 PCV valve was a late change in production SD engines. All SD cars came with the same PCV valve, but the cap, the curved hose, and the plug in the valley cover were never listed in any parts book, and replacements were not available. Original rocker cover caps and valley cover plugs for the SD-455 are hard to find, but repros have been made. |

Anybody interested in this setup: 70 YH block .030 over TRW forged pistons(10.85 comp) 16 SD heads, SD rods, RA IV dist, RA IV pushrods and guide plates, RA IV Crane cam, Rhoads lifters, brand new unused Richmond 5 spd, Mcleod 30# steel flywheel, new Hurst shifter, etc etc.... Also comes with SD exhaust manifolds, modified driveshaft and cross member. This setup is all new and has never been run, ready to drop into a 70's TA. when was the last SD produced? my 74 has a build date of 6/74. this seems to near the end of 74 production.
