Where does this Hideaway bracket go?
 

Pulled this off a 69 ... don't see it in the mechanical diagram of Hideaways.

68 and 69 or just 69?

Right where the bumper brackets attach to the bumper. This diagram shows both brackets.

Excellent, thanks ... so it reinforces the jack point? Not that I would ever use that jack point :)

yes, it's for reinforcing the jack point. both 68 and 69 use it in both standard and hideaway noses.

you got it, NEVER use your bumper jack x 50!!

I installed them, and all I can say besides the fact that you can't see them, is they get in the way for fine tuning the adjustment of the bottom grill bracket. Seriously thought about taking them back out for that reason alone.... :rolleyes:

Before I realized that the folks here were correct in their assessment that they are there to provide support for the bumper jack, I noticed that they also provide needed support for the inner plastic grilles right where they meet the headlight doors. Without those pieces in place, you could easily push the flimsy grilles in to the breaking point there.

I am in the process of removing my front bumper and found that these were welded to the bracket they are bolted to.
I had to grind off the welds to remove the bumper.

I'd say on GTOs ... besides the engine .... the Endura with Hideaways is the most horribly modified and backyard engineered piece on the car.

I've seen all manner of terrible "fixes" on them.

Check to see if the bumper is tweaked ... I'm guessing someone couldn't get the bolts back in because of alignment issues. If you are lucky they just lost the bolts and decided to weld them.

I would agree. Out of all the surface area on My 68, I have spent way more time per square inch on the front bumper than any other area of the car. Probably even at 4x the amount of time. Not just paint and prep, but getting the thing to fit, tweaking, modifications, etc. Even in final assembly after all was painted, its still took more time to fit than any other panel. The slightest movement at the attaching points, is greatly exaggerated where it meets the bumper.

Oooops, I meant were the bumper meets the fenders.

Have NOT ever kept those on my 68's (4-decades worth) and scarcely recall ever seeing them on most 68's
