WIW Door edge guards

I have a chance to pick up a set of 1969 GTO NOS door edge guards but not sure what to offer?

Different lengths have diff value.

3-tab. door edge length, for function. (i figure $45/ side)

4- tab nearly full door length, for styling. ( more than $45/side)

no screw tabs, seen em but don't know if Stock GM for 68, 69.

Some people think they are solid Gold.

The long (4 tab) set NOS in the paper bags can pull $300 to $500. A trick to watch for is to pick up a set of 4 door LeMans, NOS they are worth maybe $30 and the front door ones are very close and can be tweaked to fit a 2 door.

Wow I didn't think that much. Trying to find some to compare price.
They are in gm paper 4 tab style but I should get part number in case they are 4 door?

In the late 80's, one of the dealership stocks I cleaned out had well over a dozen packets of NOS Pontiac door edge guards in the mix. Could ID a few pairs by sight, but ID'ing the rest came by digging through original Pontiac Master Parts books that still had the Accessory pages up front. That was tough as i only had a few original Master Parts books. On pairs of door edge guards that I had a hunch on, but no Accessory listing of the accessory part number, the packets made a trip with me to one of my favorite monster country yards & then compared them to edges of original B series doors.

The 2dr A body accessory part number is 984891. The 4dr A body kit is 984892.

The only main difference between the 2dr and the front door of the 4dr is that the lower feature line is slightly higher. You can install them on 2 doors with a bit of tweaking.

Thanks for the tip! I just bought a pair of NOS 984892 guards for $25.50 and free shipping!

Hey North FYI the part number on the door edge guards are 9794499. Are these even for a 69 gto? They look right but i guess I need to do more part search

My numbers are from the january 1969 accessory listing in the Sales album. This listing is the second version (it includes the TA and Judge spoilers as options, probably why they updated it).

The 9794499 regular part number for the 69 model year rather than an accessory number. I believe you could order just a replacement door edge guard as opposed to the accessory kit (which included screws and instructions).

Then there is also the shorty version of those door edge guards. I suspect they were a later revision, probably to make the 2dr and the front doors of the 4 door the exact same piece. I'll do a little homework in my MPC to look up non accessory part numbers.

I looked up the door edge in my November 1st 1968 MPC, which lists both accessories and replacement parts. Some interesting info...

As mentioned the accessory kit for a 2 dr A body (GTO, LeMans, Tempest etc) was number 984891 and included both sides in full length as well as fastness and instruction sheet. Retail price was $5.75. The 4 door version was $10.25 (984892). These are all listed to fit 68 and 69.

The full-size and GP kits were a bit more expensive for the 2 door and a bit less for 4 doors (back door guard on big cars is very small, just the dog leg).

Now looking at the parts section guards for A bodies they sell by the individual door (no fasteners included) and now they offer both in full (4 tab) and 3/4 length (3 tab). Also interesting is that the 3/4 length are listed as fitting 68 and 69 but the full length only fit 69.

Logically this would indicate that all 68’s had the 3/4 length as well as some early 69’s and then they switched to full length.

For what it’s worth every 69 A body I ever saw with factory (on the PHS) installed guards had the full length ones or if they were missing they had four holes in the door not three).

Here are the replacement part numbers for the individual door guards (first number is 3/4 and second number is full length.

2 door right... 9791488, 9794499
2 door left... 9791489, 9794500

4 door cars also had 3/4 and full length (even for back Doors) and so did the Firebird and the GP but B bodies only list full length.

Last point is that individual guards were each almost expensive as the accessory kit. For example one front door edge guard was $4.11 versus $5.75 for the kit (which also included 8 fasteners. Mind you accessory kits were only stocked for 2 model years versus replacement parts which were offered for typically 10-15 years back then.

Thanks for the great info North! The one door guard was still in the gm package (9794499)while the other was loose will remnants of the original packaging.
So this info confirms that these are for 69 gto later door edge guards.
