Fan Clutch Question
 

Looking at the attached pictures, does my fan/clutch unit look to be too far from the radiator? I'm measuring 3" from the face of the clutch to the radiator.

Engine is running a bit hotter than I like and I want to try and find out why one step at a time.

Could anyone with a 1967 GTO no air take a look at their fan clutches and see how far it is from the radiator.

Did you take off the fan shroud for clarity or are you running without one? If without then adding one will likely help a great deal. The fan blades should be approximately half in and half out of the shroud.

Just a shade under 3" on mine. You're good there. I have a shroud also.

Ok, it looks like it is farther back than what I thought it should be. I'm looking at replacing it with the 2747 Hayden HD Clutch, I looked at the measurements and it looks a bit taller (3.34" Total Height) than what mine is. Maybe it will move the fan a little closer to the radiator.

No my GTO did not come with a fan shroud, I would like to address each one of the cooling system problems (?) before going that route. If everything else fails, I guess I will have to install one.

This car has lived all of its life here in the heat and humidity of North Carolina. I don't think the 400 has been running hot all these years.

I'm sure that it's something I have missed or overlooked. I'm going to be looking at all the usual Pontiac problems and dealing with them one at a time.

I'd say it looks too far from the radiator for me. I suggest adding a shroud......that way the fan will move more air thru the radiator instead of just moving air around the the underhood area. Biggest bang for the buck there.

Here are a couple of pictures I saved that show the fans closer to the radiator than mine.
I don't know who these belong to, I'm just using them as a reference.

I don't want to seem like I'm telling you what to do or to keep harping on the same subject but you should have a shroud. I've never seen a car with a clutch type fan that didn't have one. It will definitely make your fan much more efficient.

I've said my piece, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Edit: When I get home tonight I'll measure mine and let you know the result.

All 1967 GTOs left the factory with a “Fan Clutch” and most did not come with a shroud. This also holds true for 64-65-66.

All “Air Condition” cars automatically came with a shroud, but Non-Air cars did not.

There was a fiberglass Dealer shroud available which was recommended for trailer reasons.
I have this Dealer shroud #9774621 on my 66 GTO.
This is spelled out on page 366 of the Restoration Guide.

My two cars are Factory Original including the fan and OEM clutch and they both measure (4 inches) from radiator core to front of fan metal hub.

I agree that the shrouds help with cooling these cars down.

The 462 in my '67 doesn't get much higher than 185 even sitting in traffic in the middle of the summer here in AZ. Other than the aluminum radiator, everything else in the cooling system is factory. The shroud came with the car, but I don't believe it's correct. It fits OK, but night tightly against the radiator. I have 3" from the radiator to the parting line of the clutch, so about 2.5" to the face.

Guess I should have waited til I got home and consulted the Restoration Guide before implying all cars had shrouds though it's true most I've seen had one.

Anyway, measurement from the face of my fan clutch to radiator is only 2 inches and 3 1/2 inches from fan hub to radiator.

First thing I'm going to do is install a small temperature gauge under the dash, I know I should have done this from the start. I want to see what this thing is running as a base line, may not be as bad as I think.

It just has a hard time when the outside temp is in the 90's & up, other than that doesn't seem too bad. Temp gauge should answer a lot of questions.

What brand radiator ?

Radiator was built by Mark 7 in Bay City Michigan. Not sure they're still around.
