Just curious, why an Esprit?

Pontiac built better, definitely look better

The slightly Upscale gentleman's Firebird
Most iconic the Jim Rockford Gold Esprit.
Appealed to me the most. Herein lies my Desire.
Recently a Jim Rockford clone came up on the web for sale. Badged as a Formula 400 but
Had a 350 in it, on the net. It was super clean and the seller refused to take anything but 20K.
My first Pontiac was a 71 Esprit which I still have.
( that's another story) Trans Am's and Formulas
Great, love'em but the Panache of the subtle differences in the sleeper Esprit model is the difference in eating Lobster and Monk fish. 😉

My version of a sleeper Esprit.

Here's my 73,522 mile 1974 Esprit, I'm making some changes to. 350 2bbl is gone along with the th350, replacing it with a 455 (463) that has Fitech fuel injection and the ram air induction system air cleaner and functional Formula hood. The transmission is a 4l80e. In the rear is a 8.5 10 bolt with 3.42 gears on a Detroit Tru Trac differential spinning Moser 30 spline axles. The tubes have been welded to the center section. The rear end is sitting on Global West cat5 springs. I've also installed Global West subframe connectors. I still need to get Global West extended travel front coil over front suspension set up. The exhaust is handled by Pypes Ram Air reproduction manifolds and their stainless steel transverse muffler setup with electric cutouts. It will be riding on Year One 17" Honeycomb wheels. I've included some pictures of which the last one is of the original owner the day I purchased it from him in Kennewick Washington.

"...74 to 76 Firebird Esprit.."

Everybody always has opinions about what others should want. :D

So, here's my opinion.

LOVE the idea of a real potent "Sleeper". With the Pontiac parts now available, a 12 or even 11 sec Esprit sleeper is definitely possible.

Of the years you mentioned, I'd MUCH prefer a '76 model. Because: The '74 & '75 had strange lookin front & rear bumpers. For '76, the front & rear were changed. Looked much better, IMO.

A mild pump gas 455 should push a '76 to high 12's, if the car will hook up to the pavement.

Then, obviously, more serious big cube engines could run quicker. And there are street legal soft compound tires now, if needed, for special occasions.

Here's a former Indy class winner, which was a base '76 Bird. Remove the stickers & change to plain lookin wheels/tires & it wouldn't look quick, at all.

I have heard many times how I should put a Formula hood on it. I am in a tiny club of people that like flat hoods. Glad to see a fellow secret member of it :) Good Luck on search.
