'68 hardtop door glass.

Does the door glass for the 1968 hardtop a-body interchange with any other?
Also, does anyone have a photo of one out of the door?
I'm kind of on the lookout for one and want to make absolutely certain that I know what I'm looking at.

Greg ... I think I have one here in the house. I think I have a full set of spare side glass out of a 68 Lemans with AC ... so tinted.

dataway 12-26-2020 08:02 PM

These images are of a 68 Lemans, what appears to be right side front door glass ... going from the curve.
Have these ten feet from my computer desk :)

So, is that from a 2dr hardtop? I forgot to mention that in my original post..

Ok great, that's two good photos that show what it looks like. Wanted to change it out back when I painted the car. Couldn't find one right then and quit looking after l put the car back together. It's kinda sandblasted weld splattered or something like that. I'm in the mood to change it out now.

FWIW, I recently ordered tinted and date coded rear 1/4 glass from Auto City Classics. Not super cheap at $300 shipped for the pair, but the look great and fit great. Might be an option if you can’t find a good used replacement.

Greg Reid 12-27-2020 01:12 AM

Thanks Ken I will keep them in mind. I'm not a big matching numbers guy so date codes aren't an issue. The right part is.. Glass is one of those items that's easy to get wrong if you just take a seller's word for it. In fact, I've had a back glass in my garage for 20 years bought off ebay. I don't know what it fits, but it does not fit a 68 Tempest 2 dr hard top. Really couldn't tell until it was lying in the opening. That's why the request for photos. I was also given a door glass for my car some years ago but when I got it home I could see that it was not the correct part. The guy that gave it to me was sure that it was and he's a guy that knows these cars very well... So it's easy to get it wrong.

dataway 12-27-2020 02:31 AM

Greg ... yes my photos are from a 68 2dr hardtop.

I'd offer it up ... but I'm still waiting to compare the spare glass to the glass that's in my GTO to see which is best.

Greg Reid 12-27-2020 01:30 PM

Oh, it's no problem. They made a bunch of those things. I'm sure I can find one just as soon as I start actually searching in earnest. I just wanted to get a good look at one outside of the door without having to take mine out. I'd rather wait until I get another before I do that. Those pics will help. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1a7cbb2770.jpg

Yep, that looks a lot like weld splatter.

You wouldn't happen to have decent a tinted example would you?
In the meanwhile, I did find this..

By the way, Auto City Classics just lists the Firebird/Camaro side glass for '68..

dataway 12-28-2020 01:57 PM

Hard to beat for that price.

Weird, they show it in a full kit at the bottom of the page but the image and link to the door glass is wrong

Anyway, it's not entirely unlikely that Auto City is sourcing from AMD.

Would be funny and rewarding if repop 69-72 door glass leading edge was cut down & ground to 68 spec on a per-order basis. Imagination....

Greg Reid 12-30-2020 10:29 AM

The price for the new glass is good enough that I'm pretty sure that's the way I'll go. All the used glass I'm seeing is about the same price after the $30 or so added for shipping. Plus, my metal parts look much better, nearly rust free, than the ones I'm seeing out there. The AMD product from the link I posted looks right and it's $109 w/ free shipping..
Question though.. How do you get the old glass out of that lower rail with the 52 year old setting tape like concrete?
Do you need a hot knife or something of that nature or will a box cutter type knife and patience do? I prefer to take it out in one piece....and then throw it in the dumpster. ;)

Greg Reid 12-30-2020 10:41 AM

Oops...not free shipping but not bad...$18.

68ragtop 12-30-2020 12:24 PM

I bought all new date coded glass from Auto City Classics. They were good to deal with. I had two pieces that did not fit right & they replaced them for me without a hassle. Otherwise I was able to get them to adjust fine. If you get date coded glass be sure to specify if you expect it on the inside or the outside of the glass. Mine came on the outside, original was on the inside. Nobody has noticed though & might not be a big deal to most people. I'm Nit picking.....

My only disappointment with the glass is the blotchy tint? marks that really pop in sunlight. they seem to follow the pattern of the bends in the glass. Almost as if the curving process created the marks. Not sure how to explain it, but now that I see it it drives me kinda crazy. Almost undetectable indoors. Non tinted glass might not have them, but I am not sure on that, just a hunch.

I've often noticed that blotching on repop glass, especially so if you are wearing polarized glasses. I suspect it's a byproduct of small batch manufacturing. The other issues with repop glass are de-laminating of the windshield glass and wavy glass surface (most noticeable on the windshield).

dataway 12-30-2020 07:47 PM

Surprising there are not glass polishing services out there .... or maybe there are. I'd be tempted to send it all out to be polished rather than replace it, price being equal.

Original glass is quality stuff, with the tint all the way through (except for I think the blue band at the top of the windshield)
