1970-only rad support

Can someone help me out?

I was sure I had pictures on my phone, but can’t seem to find them now.

When I got in my accident back in 2004, I replaced my original rad support with one from a 1971 Firebird;
My recollection was that the vertical portions of the rad support behind and below the battery tray (on both sides) was different between 1970 & 1971.

I was hoping to go look at a 1970 rad support tomorrow and because I failed to prepare, I am now about 900km from home - with no way to compare either of my rad supports against this one.

I was hoping somebody could offer pictures so I could verify if it’s a 1970 part or not.

The bottom of my rad support was rusty, and the top is crunched;
I’d really like to have the correct part for my car if possible.

Have not noticed anything different between 70 & 71 Bird core supports. Have several in the shop. Will examine them very closely.

it is possible that it was a 1972 firebird which donated it’s rad support - it was twenty years ago(!);
i believe it had to do with the location(s) & sized of the openings - and maybe the revised provisions for the charcoal(?) canister that found it’s way on the 1971.

… but I still really think it was 1971.

if it wasn’t the location or size of the openings, it may have just been about indentations or bolt hole locations…
i seem to recall, that at a glance they were the same, but side by side they were different.

Yes the 70 core support is unique and different from the 71 and up. You are correct that the main difference is in the vertical section under the lh and rh sides. The evap canister mounting design changed from 1970 and thus drove changes to the both sides of the core support just above the rectangular stampings.

The top piece is a 70 unit and the bottom is a 71.

If you want the top one you can have it for free as it needs plenty of work.

i’d love to grab it, but you’re a bit too far away, and it would probably cost me a snall mint to ship.

oh, and the yard with the support… recently sold it.
lol

No problem. If you find out a friend is coming thru central IL maybe they could pick it up for you?

First picture shows a 71 core support (in front) alongside a 70 core support (rear). The next two pictures show the differences between the EVAP canisters. Only cars sold new in California were equipped with the EVAP system in 1970. The second picture is a 1970 EVAP canister and the third picture is the 71 and later canister. The last picture shows a date code on the side of the core support. FYI, I'm not sure if the date code is for the entire core support or just the side piece with the date code on it.

Great and clear pics of the differences. Thanks for posting!

BTW, nice looking '70 only canister. Not for sale is it? Mine is broken & haven't been able to find another.
