I care for a cemetery which has several veterans. Got the flags out earlier this week.

I'll be taking my Mom to my father's grave this Sunday to place more flowers and a flag. He and 3 of his 4 brothers all served beginning the early 40's.

Usually the Vetrans Administration sends people out to cemetery’s and place flags on graves.

The Boy Scouts Hans them out at a couple cemeteries we go to.
The wife & I decorate between 120-130 graves. It’s something my mother started doing years ago. Mostly people who have nobody to remember them and, of course, family members. 8 cemeteries in about a 100 mile radius.
When I was a young peckerhead, I hated it. Nowadays, it seems like it helps me keep things in perspective thinking about all those who are gone.

Happy Memorial Day!

MaryAnn, I think that is wonderful, but this is our situation. During the 1800's my great grandfather donated some of his land (he owned thousands of acres) for a church and cemetery. This is a rural area surrounded by farm lands. Since then it has been available for any of the locals for burials at no cost. Even though the old wood framed church was leveled by a hurricane during the eighties, locals continue to maintain the grounds at no cost. There is no "budget". We do it out of respect for those who have passed. Therefore we supply our own flags.

MaryAnn - The American Legion used to place the flags in the larger cemeteries around here, but seemingly no longer do.

Since I am the trustee for a more-or-less family cemetery (few more than 100 graves), I am responsible for the flags in this cemetery, and just do relatives in others. The flags are not expensive, and are simply a token of respect, and other emotions.

Jon.

Our governor just started allowing small gatherings of up to 10 people. Since our town/village has cancelled the usual Memorial Day service, a couple friends and I are hoping to do our own "memorial service" at a cemetery where one friend always places veterans' flags anyway. We figure one of us can read a prayer. I hope to share my feelings about my wife never knowing her father who died as an army soldier in 1945 when she was only three months old. We're hoping to find someone to play taps. If it doesn't violate military protocol(?) a couple of us veterans hope to do a gun salute.

Our local Lion's Club puts this up in my front yard for Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day holidays. It's a fund raiser that I pay $35.00 per year.

The flag in the background by the Blue Spruce is a wire spool top painted up to look like a flag. That is up from early spring to late fall (snow gone in spring, before snow in fall).

Attached to the wire spool top is our grandson's Marine Corp Boot Camp Company banner.

Keagan starts his "Crucible" on Tuesday and will graduate from boot camp on June 12th. We were going to attend his graduation, but graduations have been closed to the public.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

We have our large flag out. Plus little flags. We remember. Thoughts and prayers for all those who gave esp the veterans to make our country great and free. There has been a program on the Smithsonian Channel about our entering WW II .Pictures I've never seen, also storys I've never heard. Eleanor Roosevelt visiting troops in South Pacific is one. It's so graphic.

To our Veterans, because All have given some, and some have given All. My thanks for the Freedom you have fought to preserve. :usflag:
