Production Numbers - Formula 455HO vs TA

What are the production numbers for 1971 and 1972 respectively for Formula 455 HO’s vs Trans Am’s?

johnta1 11-30-2017 09:45 PM

321 455 HO Formulas in 1971
276 455 HO Formulas in 1972

Formula Production

How about auto vs manual in 72 HO Formulas?

Bentwheelbob 11-30-2017 09:52 PM

Quit changing the subject Mike. Let’s get the base question answered first. JohnTA has only gotten us half way there.

muscle_collector 11-30-2017 10:17 PM

2116 for 71
1286 for 72

Formulabruce 12-01-2017 06:48 AM

I figured everyone knew the TA totals by heart?

:D

So now back to my question...

The Boss 12-01-2017 09:11 AM

1971 TA

885 Manual
1231 Auto

1972 TA

458 Manual
828 Auto

I don't have the breakdown on HO Formulas

Using The Boss numbers and Fred's numbers...

71 prod numbers

312 HO Formulas
2116 TAs
2437 Total

Fred Simmons data:

1051 MT and 1386 AT
166 MT ( 7 M13 and 159 M22) 155 AT

Not sure anyone has 72 HO breakdowns?

So now back to my question...
If you went to the link I posted, you would see all the data.

:)

As far as I know, there isn't any further breakdown for the 72 Formula 455 HO's.

I would like to ask Fred if he has any more data sheets somewhere.

:)

Judge273 12-01-2017 12:22 PM

I guess I knew that answer and no matter what website it all goes back to Fred's numbers.

That was my point.

Nothing new on that breakdown....

MikeNoun 12-01-2017 02:52 PM

And 109 Formulas with Ram Air in 1971.

Bentwheelbob 12-01-2017 09:29 PM

This just in from Fred Simmonds - it looks like only 82 of the 276 (30%) 1972 455 HO Formulas had the M22 transmission. Also, based on other widely known production data, 455 HO Formulas were only 17.6% of the the total production of 455 HO equipped F-Body cars in 1972. So which is worth more - a 1972 Trans Am or a 1972 455 HO Formula?

That is so cool, wondered about that '72 production number breakdown for many years.

Judge273 12-01-2017 11:05 PM

Well, that's breaking news!

As far as worth I'd say it depends on the apples to apple comparisons. A Formula HO would need to have the handling package, posi, gauges, ps, pb, Formula steering wheel. Couldn't get a swirl dash, shaker hood, fender flares/vents or decals. Yet some thought Formula hood with RA was the better system.

As far as fender flares/vent and decals. TA couldn't get any colors except white and lucey.

So, in conclusion the nicely equipped LB TA 4 speed would be more valuable. Imho....

Wow...That's awesome news, I thought that information with those Formula numbers had been lost with all that was going on in 1972. Thank you for posting that information. Being fairly new to this board and not knowing the background of all the members- How accurate do you think those notes are?

Thanks,
CLW

We're so fortunate to have such a passionate Pontiac historian like Fred in our midst. A living legend for sure.

In regards to T/A vs Formula value, my dad says he never cared for the Trans Am's because of the bolt on plastic, he preferred the Formula's for his new car inventory, easier sales.

Judge273 12-02-2017 06:46 AM

Thanks Doug for getting in touch with Fred, and looking thru his notes for 72 Formula HO breakdown.

But, you never answered the value question?

CLW,

Care to share details on yours? Assume a 73 SD 4 speed too?
