High torque mini starter ?

My son got his 68 GTO 400 back from the engine re builder. We would like to replace the starter with a mini. Looking on line some say they won't fit ram air exhaust manifolds.

We had the oe one up there and had plenty of room
Brent is running ram air restorations round port manifolds.

What brand, quality, will work with his combo ?

Thanks
Bill

I'm using one and it clears my 67 400 with RA exhaust just fine. I have the Hi Torque Brand.

Im using the Summit brand mini starter. It works very good, and is rather small. It spins real fast also.

I still had fitment issues with my headers though. I had to flip the mini starter upside down to get it to fit.

I just put one on to clear long branch RAREs from py. IMI starter with the same patent number as the one i bought off ebay a few years back. I had to buy another starter because i couldn't find just the mounting block. (trans mount to block mount)

RARE sells a mini which I installed in my 69 bird with the LB manifolds after the Summit mini wouldn't clear...

Ive tried a few,,,some hit the oil pan lip requiring you to flatten it .I bought a robmmc which all you do is loosen 2 bolts and you can clock it where you want and it also clears the oil pan lip .This one is what I would definitely recommend.

RobbMc here too

If you want years of trouble free service, find a mini with a front nose support for the drive. The starter drive will thank you for that. Most of these mini starters are built from Toyota and Nissan gear reduction starters, which are good starters, but they were designed for 4 and 6 cylinder engines. When being used in V-8 engines, cranking exerts extra side load on the drive which in turn wears it out much quicker than it would on a 4 cylinder engine. I think All Pontiac might sell one with a nose support bushing.

Thanks a bunch all :)
Looks like we be going with the RobbMc

Will see if made in the "USA" means what it used too. :usa2:

Thanks
Bill

Another vote for the IMI Hi-Torque. Mine has provided trouble-free performance for the past 7 years (daily driver).

The RobbMc is available with the Pinion Support Modification.

Hi guys, long time Pontiac owner, first post on this forum.

I have a power master on my 69 Gto, round port heads and Doug's headers. No fitment issues. Plenty of adjustability designed into the starter.

I have only had one issue. The brushes wore out kind I fast (likely under 500 starts). $20 bucks and I got a new set of brushes, replaced in 10 minutes.

Mini starters are the way to go.

Any other brands able to mount with the solenoid facing downwards like this with ram air manifolds?

Perhaps a little paranoia setting in after this unfortunate event, but I'd like to get the cables as far away from the block and manifolds as possible (and would like to save a few bucks unless I can find a used RobbMc out there).

I believe the Powermaster Mastertorque Starter 9610 is completely adjustable.
