1976 455 4 speed T/A

Does anyone know of there ever being a factory blue 1976 Trans am 455 4 speed? Also black interior. I have never seen one period.

Chief of the 60's 01-09-2020 11:40 AM

I bought a Firethorn red with red interior new and don't recall seeing one on the dealer's lot. Silver seemed to be popular back then, at least in my area.

Back in 1976 a friend bought one new - 455, 4 speed, blue w/black interior. I remember going to the drag strip with him, although I don't recall what times he ran.

I guess they did make at least one.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to check out a possible blue # matching 455 4 speed Saturday. Currently painted black with factory honeycombs. I'll check the cowl tag and everything else and post my findings.

I have one in my database, an Athena Blue 455 4speed Custom Black interior, AM/FM 8 track.

:)

Wow, 1. I tried to buy it last year and he was set on keeping it. Now he's realized he's never going to do anything with it. I've been told by his brother in law $5500 will buy it. Texas car no rust.

Sounds like a good price. Especially if no rust.
455 and 4 speed is even better.

:)

Blue was not a factory offered color on the Trans Am in 1976.

Now, we can never say never, but I'd need to see the data plate or factory paperwork before I'd believe it was originally delivered in that any shade of blue available during the 1976 model year.

At the present time, Don Keefe's Poncho Perfection is the only print publication I am working for. I have two articles in the current issue and one in the next. I'm hoping to have a few more articles in Hot Rod.

Well, thanks! I was just getting started with Muscle Car Review when the plugged got pulled, too. We'll see how it all shakes out.

Regardless, I created www.PontiacV8.com for blogging, so feel free to take a look.

Starlite Black '76 455 4spds have been most common in my locale. there are at least 4 of them, have sold several of their owners parts.

A real solid straight goldenrod yellow '76 455 4spd project sold ten miles from me 18 months ago. Easy body/paint project, #'s matching, needed typical 4-5K spent on interior replacement. $3400.

Sterling silver, White, Firethorn, Carousel Red are other standard colors, am sure a few exist in my region as original 455 4spd cars, but have not seen them.

I checked the car out this morning. Not a blue car. Code 19 across the board, Deluxe interior. Very original numbers matching with the 3.23 posi. Now I think the man is backing out.

It's been 40+ years, my memory may be fuzzy about the car I mentioned earlier...:) At the time there were a ton of Trans Ams in my little home town, this many years later I could have mixed up which car was which.

Having said that, was it still possible to special order paint colors as late as 1976? The guy I knew came from a well to do family and I wouldn't have put it past him to do so if he could.

Rocky Rotella 01-13-2020 11:19 AM

It happens to us all! And because '74 and '75 Trans Am's were available in blue and share so much visual similarities, it's an easy one to SNAFU!

As for the special paint orders, while it's impossible to speak with absolute certainty, I've never seen a special-paint Trans Am after the 1972 model year. In fact, the ONLY special-paint Trans Ams I've seen have been 1972 model year!

I highly doubt there were any special-paint Trans Ams from 1973 onward. I base this on the story Larry Leist tells when he tried to order his 1973 SD-455 Trans Am in black. https://www.pontiacv8.com/articles/2...primed-example

Were one-off or special paint cars part of the 1972 Norwood strike resolution details? At this point we don't know but why at least (4) 1972 Trans Ams were produced in non-standard Trans Am colors, but Larry couldn't get his 1973 Trans Am built in black makes it seem logical.

Of all the T/As I remember from back then (there were like seven or eight of them in my small town of 2,000 people, which was a pretty high concentration) the one that does stand out was a '74 SD-455; that one was definitely blue, and the original owner still has it.

How cool!
