helping Id a gas tank

I believe I have a 1972 firebird gas tank but noticed the fill neck is longer than my 70. Can anyone help me id it? I also noticed it's little thicker than my 70. Did they have my gallon capacity it 72 than in 70? and why is the neck longer?

Looks like a 1968 Chevy II to me. 1971 Ventura II looks similar.

are all 70-73 tanks the same for firebirds?

Well it looks like Ames Performance sells the same tank for ‘70 - ‘73.

The reproduction parts catalogs can be a pretty decent reference on different year parts interchangeability.

I believe the '70 tank was on it's own, due to the gas cap (later '69-70) and filler neck. 1971-3 used another cap (thru '74). But the shape of the tank may be the same.

How long is the neck?
The 70 was about 1/4" longer than a 73.
(don't know a 72's)

:)

Pretty sure 70 tanks were non vented too, I decided on a 1970 tank for my 72 firebird since I deleted the emissions stuff, it has no added vents but uses a 1 way vented cap. I added a 2nd vent to the return side of the pickup since Im not using that at the moment.

oh the mystery tank neck is longer and has bent ears on all corners. I ll measure it tonight

There was 2 different 1970 firebird tanks made. YOUR Gas tank should look like this one Nacho...

Since your Formula was equipped with the NA9 "option", your tank should look like the one FBruce posted. That's the one year only 1970 Cal. emissions tank.

My experience has shown me that from 1970 thru 1973, there were only 3 basic tanks. 1970 Non Cal emissions, 1970 with Cal. emissions, and 1971 through 1973.

The slight differences in how long the filler neck sticks out is more a matter of how close the line worker was to the advised length (depth) in inserted the filler before soldering it in place.

His RA Formula is a Norwood build, sold in MI. It did NOT have NA9.
Not like Formulabruce's picture. Unless Ramairnacho is talking about his Esprit.

Its hard to remember a guy in Cali - not owning a Cali car .
I have forgotten a couple times his car came out of Michigan myself . :stupid:

I have assumed his car was a Calif car, my error then.
I will say, Northern Ca., Roughly Palo Alto and North, Sacramento, San Fran, Bay area Firebirds were made in Norwood WITH E.C.S.
Norwood had the 1970 ECS tanks, and ECS stuff and installed it.
