68-72 rectangular firewall grommet

Which direction does it go? Snap in from the outside or inside?

I pushed mine in from the front. I can't say 100% that it's correct but I think it is. On the other hand, it makes no functional difference and I wouldn't be surprised if you could find untouched originals that are installed both ways.

Actually it makes a difference since the hole is not flat. I'm having trouble both ways with my aftermarket core support. It makes sense from a production line point of view to install from the front.
thanks

I looked at the core support in the '69 Assembly Manual and it does not show the grommet. 68GTOMN (aka Kurt) has a couple of untouched '68s. If he sees this maybe he could help.

I don't know why I didn't think about looking at my own car since I'm at home right now. It has the original core support. It definitely goes in from the front. That raised lip captures the grommet 'fingers'.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...217b2b74a1.jpg

Awesome! thanks Is that an original core support? Mine's a Goldstar repo from NPD. i was having trouble getting the original grommet to snap in from either side. i ordered a new one from Inline Tube. hopefully my hole isn't punched wrong

I'd love to see the latest offerings for reproduction core supports. I wonder if they have fixed the whole lean angle issue.

alsalp 07-02-2020 12:23 AM

i wasn't aware of the angle issue until after i installed it. seems ok to me. I'll have to take a look and see how its made.

OH Greg, you rascal... Here's a picture from my lot of one of my cars. 54K mile original. See the grommet fingers grabbing the backside of the support? Yes, installed from front!

Kurt out

FYI The aftermarket hole is wrong. You can modify it to make it work just like any other aftermarket piece.
Also the holes for the plastic retainers for the frame seals are not correct either if your using them?

I was able to snap in my original grommet in the Goldstar (NPD) core. Not before ordering a new grommet from inline tube. I'll update when I get it
