DUI distributor

Has anybody used a davis unified ignition (DUI) distributor on a '65 or '66 tri power set up?. Any clearance issues between the distributor and the rear of the intake manifold? Thanks

Do you mean HEI? It won't clear.

Yeah, it's been posted many times, on Pontiac forums, that the big cap HEI can not be used with a Tri-Power intake.

But there are lots of small cap options. Lots of guys like the Pertronix Ignitor points replacement system. It allows you to retain the factory look.

If you don't care at all about the factory look, there are other options. Don't know your budget. A high end option is an MSD dist & coil.

The Pertronix is cheaper.

This one has the Ignitor 3, with rev limiter. You can usually find a 25% online discount from Advance Auto.

Even with tax, the Summit brand is a few bucks cheaper.

Then there are the cheap Chinese Ebay models. Some are also listed with a coil, and some with wires. Don't know if any of these items are usable or not.

Or, use the original distributor with points. Breaker points lasted in excess of 10,000 miles. When they began to fail, symptoms were noticeable, but the engine still ran. With HEI, Pertronix, MSD, etc., failure usually results in sudden death for the ignition system. If you have spare parts with you, no tow truck needed. Otherwise, you’re stuck aside the road. I carry a spare set of points & condenser.

DUI makes what they call a Tri-Power distributor. It has a small cap. Go to their website and check it out. I ordered one last week to go with my Dick Boneski restored Tri Power.

I've been REAL happy with the Crane ZRi ignition (now FAST XR-i) set up I put in the stock distributor. It installs the same as a Pertronix set up but also includes an adjustable rev limiter for the same or lower price as the typical Pertronix I. The rev limiter comes in very useful when you are more used to rev happy Chevy small and big blocks that can go to 7000 in a tick like I am. I set the limiter to 5100 on the tripower and it has really helped me not over rev and get into valve float. This is also helpful since when we first got it running a couple of the rocker studs liked to back their way out a bit but haven't budged since the limiter was put in place.

Got stopped in the Goat back in 1984, leaving Smiles strip club at the Ledgewood Circle, headed out East on I-80. NJ State boys pulled us over, thought I was going to get a DUI (DWI). Luckily, just got a ticket for doing 89 in a 55, told the 'heat' we were doing over 120 'for they pulled us over. But I digress......................

It's good to digress every now and then.:old:
