Dipstick length?

I finally got my engine fired up in the car this morning. Had it on the dyno last April, but this was the first time in car and all went well. The manual calls for 19.2 pints in a new tranny. I put in 20 pints with hot tranny and I'm still showing low. It's just registering on the lower part of stick. the stick appears to be 23 1/2 " from under the pull to the end (just the metal). I see Ames list it as 24". Is this the whole length? It's a 400 tranny. Or do I have a wrong dipstick in my Lemans?

We don't talk about dipstick lengths around here ;)

But, I want to compare what I have with you guys!

Can someone with a 72 Lemans and a 400 tranny measure their dipstick length for me and let me know what length you have?

doing it now..

23 5/8 from the rubber at the handle where the metal dipstick goes into from there to the tip is 23 5/8 inches. this is the one off my car. 72 PQ 400 A/C car (if it matters) I went to a lokar locking type,no more leaks and I don't worry about the trans shooting fluid up the dipstick if it fails..

seems you are about 2qts low looking at the one I have. Did you change the convertor, deeper trans pan? hard to imagine as mine and yours are real close and I know mine has never been touched. I would make sure the trans vent is clear and add a quart then check it.

I have a new torque convertor in a newly rebuilt trans. I only assumed the new convertor (purchased by rebuilder of trans) would hold the same amount as my old one. No? I have no history of the trans beforehand, since it was out of the car with the motor (numbers matching) when purchased. Since our lengths are the same, I can only assume I'm still low on fluid. Thank you.

yea i'm not sure if the convertor would be the difference my self

I called the tranny rebuilder today. He said in a 400, it takes 12 sometimes 13 quarts to fill when empty. Not sure why the manual states less than 10 (19.2 pints). So, I still need to add a couple quarts. That makes me feel better. He did say if it was a higher stall convertor and smaller, it would take less. He sourced a new stock one for me.
