Radial T/A or Wide Ovals

I am going to put new tires on the Judge this spring (ones on there have been around since pre-2004). Car currently has Radial T/As but I was on the Summit website and saw they have the Firestone Wide-Ovals (radials). Does anyone know if the Wide-Ovals use the small lettering? I've seen others with big letters and I'm not a fan. Also, if I went with them, which size (F70 or G70)?

I probably will go with the Radial T/As because the Wide-Ovals are almost double the cost ($113 vs $256 per tire)!!!

I just put the radial T/A's on mine for the same reason. Price. Not sure if the wide ovals are small lettering, but I believe they should be G70.

Too bad...those wide ovals would look great on your car. Just ask Wanda, you'll find her up on Scrap Metal Hill :)

But those big brown eyes of hers are a bit distracting...

They are the big letters. They will say 225/70. G70 is correct

Mickey Thompson S/T Radials are very high quality tires and look cool...I believe they make them in 15" only??? I am ordering a set of them for my 69 Chevelle. What I hear is they are softer compound than BFG.

Hahaha!

For those of you who just missed it - that was a Springsteen reference & an obscure one!

Welcome back Frank - another vote here for the wide ovals!

Open All Night
Bruce Springsteen

Well, I had the carburetor, baby, cleaned and checked
With her line blown out she's hummin' like a turbojet
Propped her up in the backyard on concrete blocks
For a new clutch plate and a new set of shocks
Took her down to the carwash, check the plugs and points
Well, I'm goin' out tonight, I'm gonna rock that joint

Early north Jersey industrial skyline
I'm a all-set cobra jet creepin' through the nighttime
Gotta find a gas station, gotta find a pay phone
This turnpike sure is spooky at night when you're all alone
Gotta hit the gas, baby, I'm running late
This New Jersey in the mornin' like a lunar landscape

Now the boss don't dig me, so he put me on the night shift
It takes me two hours to get back to where my baby lives
In the wee wee hours your mind gets hazy
Radio relays towers, won't you lead me to my baby
Underneath the overpass, trooper hits his party light switch
Good night, good luck, one, two power shift

I met Wanda when she was employed
Behind the counter at Route 60 Bob's Big Boy
Fried chicken on the front seat, she's sitting in my lap
We're wiping our fingers on a Texaco road map
I remember Wanda up on scrap metal hill
With them big brown eyes that make your heart stand still

Hoo hoo, whoa!
Ha!
Oh now, hey

Well at 5 a.m. oil pressure's sinking fast
I make a pit stop, wipe the windshield, check the gas
Gotta call my baby on the telephone
Let her know that her daddy's coming on home
Sit tight, little mama, I'm a-coming around
I got a three more hours but I'm covering ground

Your eyes get itchy in the wee wee hours
Sun's just a red ball rising over them refinery towers
Radio's jammed up with gospel stations
Lost souls calling long distance salvation
Hey mister deejay won't you hear my last prayer
Hey ho rock 'n roll deliver me from nowhere

Hey da da di da, di da da
Oh hey da da di da, di da da
Oh hey da da di da, di da da
Oh hey da da di da, di da da

Hey Chris
Now those wide-ovals look good. The ones I saw on a site did not have WIDE OVALS filled in. They were just big outlines of the letters

Same ones I run on my GT-37.

racerboy 03-11-2018 09:30 PM

I like those. Damn. $1000 for tires and they’re not even for the Porsche. Ugh

I can see the wide ovals for a judge or a 455 ho gt37 or t37 but no way am I gonna pay that much for bias ply tires . Went with MT radials

7072 03-12-2018 09:16 PM

I Like the wide ovals, but I'm not paying $1,000 either. Guess I will go with TA"s

keith k 03-12-2018 09:28 PM

Anybody have experience driving with the radial Wide Ovals? Do they drive as well as Radial T/As? (not that T/As are great tires... but much better than repro bias plys for ride and steering)

I love the wide ovals also but how can that tire cost twice as much . I guess coker figured to complete a high dollar restoration you are going to need these tires . If their pricing was more in line they probably would sell more tires .

I bought a set of G70-14 Bias ply Redlines for my Lemans H/O about 2 years ago...I bought them from Summit Racing...I believe the were about $900...they ride pretty good, and I sure like the look of them. Attachment 477973

The Boss 03-13-2018 07:22 AM

I think each of my sets have been in the $900 range & I've bought several - the Goodyears are more!

I like the way they ride and race - it's part of why I enjoy the older cars. If we took everything and replaced it with modern technology it wouldn't be an old car and have that feel now would it?

They don't have to cost that much. You are right, a guy doing a high dollar resto is gonna pay the price. I agree with you, if they would lower their prices a little they would sell more tires and probably make more money in the long run, but it is their business and they can run it the way they like. I have 2 Judges That I would love to have the wide ovals on.
