quality difference (ring & pinion)
1 Attachment(s)
The last time I was in the market for a (replcement) ring and pinion for my Formula, I just bought a brand I recognized;
I had no idea there were multiple brands out there. I have since read the occasional post here and there about differing quality of different brands of ring and pinion sets. I will be in the market for a set (3.90:1) and wanted to get the opinion of PY members as to pros and cons of one brand over another. Attached is a screen shot from my ebay app showing three different brands of the same ratio... http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1570978614 I sincerely appreciate any opinions that members care to share with me :D |
I might have a set of 3.90 12 bolt chevy richmond gear I never used. I'll check, not sure if they were for a 3 series or 4 series carrier. If you are interested let me know. I usually stick with Richmond or gm gears. Not saying anything is wrong with the others.

Richmond has their plant in Liberty about 25 miles from where I live so I'm a tad partial to them. That being said there are posts all over this forum mentioning that while Richmond has a good R&P they are quite noisy in many installations.
As to the other R&P's other members will have to chime in. Best of luck with your search. |
3.90 ratio can be a little noisy

I've used Motive, Richmond, and US Gear
Never any issues with any of them. Never had noise issues with any of the Richmonds I've used either. My favorite gear is US Gear however which coincidentally is the preferred gear used by Strange as well as our local driveline shop in town that builds rears for all kinds of off road desert racing applications with an excellent reputation. Personally, I don't think you'll go wrong with any of the 3 I mentioned though. |
Platinum torque gear set appears to be a re'branded Motive Gear and there is one on Ebay for 175.00 delivered
Thin gear set may be engineered to work on a 4 series carrier so watch that |
The three sets of Richmond I've installed were all quiet, one Motive and that was quiet.

I'll send you a PM. The set of 3.55:1 gears I bought before, were a Richmond set, and just after I bought and i stalled them, Inread complaints about them being noisey... My carrier is a three series; but if you know how to verify one versus another, please let me know so that I can conform. |
Thank you to everyone for chiming in, I really appreciate it!

Motive or Richmond.

thank you to everyone who offered an opinion, I really appreciate it.
I ended up striking a deal, and bought an unused set of Richmond gears (mentioned in this thread) - I did not intend, or hope to find a set of gears through this thread, but I'll take a stroke of good luck when it strikes! Thanks again - this is really a fantastic online community!! |
