57 - Exhaust manifolds 455

Looking to see if someone here has put a later model Pontiac motor in a 57 Pontiac? My main question is has anybody used long branch manifolds from RARE in this application and did you have any problems clearing steering box? Any responses are welcome even if you used other manifolds but I’m really wanting to use 2.5”.

I have long wondered if a right manifold would be the ticket for the left side? Let us know :D

I installed a 400 in my 1957 Chieftain using factory manifolds but NOT ram air/HO manifolds.

From installing RARE long branch manifolds in my GMC (with '55 HydraMatic case)- I'm guessing the long branch manifold outlets will collide with the rear engine mounts. I had to remove the GMC crossmember and build a custom crossmember and engine mounts, which is now a very crowded area. The driver's side is even more crowded.

Umm... with the outlet aimed up at the firewall, or aimed forward?

Thanks for all replies. Still hoping someone will respond who as actually done exhaust manifolds on a 57 with later model motor.

"Umm... with the outlet aimed up at the firewall, or aimed forward?"

Well, I have an extra right side head...I just need to work out the water cross over from the left rear to the right front...
:D

I am not sure if this info will help you, but the stock heads on my 55' engine were the same. They both had all of the holes etc. on the ends, but one was just on backwards from the other. This engine had reverse flow cooling with the elbows on the ends of the heads going to the water pump. The left hand manifold also angled forward and looped under the oil pan to tie into the right hand before going back as single exhaust.

In post 7, I was being a wise arse. Yes, the head is ambidextrous. There is no room for a manifold to exit the rear on the Driver's side and i would love to know if any of the RA pieces could be used to exit the lower front on the L side.
In post 5, Jack was pulling my leg.
