Do 1974 GTO's have a unique breather tube?
I am wondering if the '74 GTO uses a unique breather tube.
I had previously understood that there were two types of breather tubes that fit all Pontiac V8 applications, and currently have both. After realizing that the correct one for my Formula (a non-Ram Air car) was different that the one used with the Ram Air aircleaner, I looked for, and eventually found the style I needed - and I had thought this was the same style which the '74 GTO used. One of my brothers has a '74 GTO, so I'm hoping to help him get a correct breather tube. Any help would be appreciated. |
They very well could be as the base is different from TA's I gave my buddy mine off my old 74 back in 1987. He ended up having it chromed. Would'nt work on his 69 RA III car. He gave it back to me!

could you measure the upper flat section?
the diameter reduces where it's curved, so there is a perfectly round length in between the two turns. The one I gave my brother, he gave back because it apparently doesn't reach far enough. |

Jonny, Here's a couple pics of the one on my old '74 GTO...that I don't own any longer, but maybe this might help...

This is unruhjonny’s brother with the 74 GTO, I’m having a heck of a time finding a breather tube that works. My original one didn’t come with the car. I’ll see about starting a post about trying to find one

@ Eric:
A friend just linked the following: https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...d.php?t=842270 http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...3&d=1582907021 That "Trans AM" tube looks like a dead ringer for the tubes shown on '74 GTO's earlier in this thread! Then this (not from the linked thread): https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1639754838 That last image is for 1974 air cleaner part numbers; It clearly shows the 1974 Trans Am (& SD455) "F/8 4 B.C. RAM AIR" shaker base is the same one as the 1974 GTO "X/8 4 B.C.-GTO"! Although it's possible that the 1975+ shaker base was revised to use a different tube, for at least 1973 & 1974 the tube was specific to shakers!. With this knowledge, I'd wager a that you can find one being reproduced! So it looks like my collection of breather tubes does not include the 73-74 Trans Am breather tube - mystery solved!! We would just need to verify that your car has the correct base - which I should be able to do easily enough; If you have a latter base, then that means the "TA" breather tube was used for more years. IIRC your '77 used the tube without the horizontal section - is that correct? |
