AC components...who is everybody using?

5 Attachment(s)
I'm in the process of restoring my 70 GTO and it's time to restore/replace AC components. I'd like to restore/replace the OEM components as closely as possible (at least in design/appearance), unless there is a compelling reason not. Also would like to control cost, where it makes sense.

So...who/what is everyone using these days...Old Air? Any quality restorers for OEM units?

FWIW...I'm considering Auto AC Solutions for the condenser (same unit $65 less than Old Air).

Thoughts or experiences??

Pics attached of my components...

I would never use Old Air again. I use Classic Air in Florida.

I needed some parts for my 72, so I decided to upgrade to a whole new unit. I went with Classic Air and it was a straight forward easy to install system. I've never messed with AC stuff before. I just need to get my system evacuated and charged in the spring. The compressor supposedly only takes about 5 HP to run as opposed to the original which takes 15HP. The new compressor does look different (I think it's Sanderson), but much lighter (10lbs. compared to about 50).
I think I paid $1300 for everything.

I use an AC Delco evaporator out of a 78-79 Firebird with an accumulator for the same. This set up works for F body or A body. I use an R4 compressor and brackets for a 79 Lemans(301). Compressor is optional as far as A6, R4 or Sanden. I don't like the way a Sanden compressor looks(Japanese). I used my original condenser. This set up eliminates expansion valves, POA's and V.I.R's. It looks reasonably factory and gives great access to number 2 and 4 spark plugs. In 100* weather my A/C blows Ice cold. Why reinvent the wheel. If your car doesn't have factory air then that would be a different story.

Okay...called Classic Air/Original Air and it seems like the Stage 3 kit makes the most sense for my application.

Although my GTO is essentially numbers matching, I'm doing more of a restomod, so not absolutely necessary to rebuild original parts. At $550+ and shipping both ways for just the compressor, I think I may hang on to the OEM parts and get the kit. It won't look a whole lot different from factory and will take advantage of the weight/performance savings of a modern unit.

I don't think $1200 for the entire kit is outrageous...thoughts?

That's the kit I got. When I had questions, they answered promptly and were extremely helpful. I was happy with the kit and install results.

Do you have any pics of the install? Curious to see how different it looks from stock.

I haven't mastered pics here. But, if you want to pm me, I can send you pics via my phone.
