Sunfire Red? Convince me.
It kind of looks pink, I'm all for originality, but not Mary Kay...
Should we just go with another red? |
If sunfire red is original to your car, I would not change it. It is a rare color that was almost cancelled because of warranty claims.

I've seen this on a '64 before, it is a unique color and if you are going for original go for it. The '64 I saw was owned by the GM of what used to be the Paddock here in Indiana. It is not pink it has more of an orange hue IMO.

Back in the late 70's a guy here had a Sunfire red '64 GTO with a black interior and a set of Cragar S/S wheels. Sharpest car in town. If I had a '64 and had to pick a color to paint it, I would choose sunfire red over any of the other factory colors.

It's more of a salmon color. I had a Sunfire hardtop back in 73 with a white vinyl top and parchment interior. If I got another 64 I would paint it that color just because you don't see it at every car show you go to.

Not exactly my favorite but neither is the Pinehurst Green that was the original color of my GTO.
Definitely not a Mary Kay pink. Agree that it is more a salmon color. Buick also had it in '64, called theirs Coral Mist. You can google all sorts of nice pix of '64 Rivieras and Pontiacs in this color. It might be less common than some other colors but not exactly rare. Never heard the story of the cancellation before. It wasn't wildly popular, that would account for why it was a 1 year only color. I like original and that includes colors. I want my car to look like it came out of the mid '60s. A Sunfire Red '64 will stand out in a crowd a lot more than the more common Cameo White and Grenadier Red '64s and will certainly look like it was from that era even if the medium metallic color choices look more dated today. Some want a more updated look, including more fashionable modern colors. Choice is up to you. Personally, I think the Sunfire Red pops best with a Parchment interior rather than Black. |
There was a Sunfire red '64 coupe running around town here awhile back, and it looked really sharp. Sort of a coppery metallic but leaning to salmon or coral hues. Not even close to pink. It looked waaay sharper than grenadier red, IMO. I say go for it and keep it original. Sunfire Red is the "Iris Mist" for '64....a rare and unique color.

yeah,,not a fan...mariner turquoise looks so good on 64s...or what ever they call it...the dark turquoise...is...awesome

Been thinking about all the '64 regular colors. The few '64s with special order colors that I've come across are inherently cool for me, but not counting them for this purpose.
In the right combination, I like Cameo White (C) & Starlight Black (A) well enough, not so much the other non-metallic colors, Skyline Blue (H), Alamo Beige (R), and Grenadier Red (V). But I've seen '64 GTOs in each of these colors and they looked pretty nice. Silvermist Gray (D) would be out for me, I've never liked silver on cars. Yet, nearly 40 years ago I saw a '64 GTO in a parking lot in that color, looked awesome because it was in such great shape compared to my own at the time. I don't remember if it was a convertible though. If I was ordering a GTO in '64, what color would I have picked? Probably would have come down to Marimba Red (L) and Nocturne Blue (W) I think. My first new car I special ordered, a 1980 Phoenix SJ coupe in Montreux Maroon (lower body was silver). That color was similar to Marimba Red. A year earlier, I ordered, but never received, a '79 Trans Am in Nocturne Blue. Gulfstream Aqua (Q) never did much for me but like the Sunfire Red (N), stuff a Parchment interior in it and I like it. I like Saddle Bronze (S) just a bit better than Singapore Gold (T) but only slightly better than Alamo Beige. Yorktown Blue (F) and Aquamarine (P) don't move my needle much one way or the other. I put Pinehurst Green (J) in my top 5 because that is the one I got. I also like to claim the cover drawing on the Car & Driver mag shows a Pinehurst Green GTO. I did this just to show how subjective the color choice is. So by order of preference, I think I'd list them as: 1A-Marimba Red Poly 1B-Nocturne Blue Poly 3-Cameo White 4-Starlight Black 5-Pinehurst Green Poly 6A-Sunfire Red Poly 6B-Gulfstream Aqua Poly 8A-Aquamarine Poly 8B-Yorktown Blue Poly 10A-Saddle Bronze Poly 10B-Singapore Gold Poly 12A-Grenadier Red 12B-Skyline Blue 12C-Alamo Beige 12D-Silvermist Gray Poly Ask me tomorrow and I might order them differently. I'm sure each of you have your favorites too. You can bet I wouldn't kick any '64 GTO, no matter what color, out of my garage. |
