1974 GTO 4 speed shifter lever question
 

On the 74 GTO with 4 speed. What is the correct shifter lever and knob? Does anybody have pictures of the shifter knob? Thanks Steve

On my 74 the previous owner put in a 66 Muncie 4 speed with shifter. he cut a slot in the floor to make the shifter work. What shifter can I put in to use the original hole location for the shifter and console? Thanks Steve

The factory shifter for a 74 GTO was probably the same one as Chevrolet used in the Nova. Those shifters were were made by a company in Michigan called ITM. I think it stands for Inland Tool & Manufacturing. The 2nd Gen Camaros (1973 and up) used that shifter as well, not sure if the one for a 74 Nova is the same as 74-75 Camaro. (There are several different versions of that shifter as to the curve & shape of the stick also the angle of the base where it passes thru the floorpan.)

Is there a part number for the shifter lever? Steve

It is a different shifter than a 75-81 Camaro. I am currently running the Camaro style in my GTO because I swapped to a Super T10 transmission. I still have the factory Saginaw transmission and shifter. I will take a picture of it tonight and post a picture. It just had a white round knob on the shifter stick. It didn't even have a shift pattern stamped on it. I'm fairly certain that mine was 100% original.

OK, thanks. In my 74 GTO right now it has a 65 Muncie 4 speed. What is the length of the tail shaft housing on a Saginaw. The person who had the car before me had to cut a slot in the floor to get the transmission to shift. Steve

There are a few pictures of the original shifter out of my 74 gto. I am now using a 78 Camaro shifter in mine. A 65 Muncie should have the same shifter mount location as a saginaw. You would just have to source the correct shifter mounting plate. A super T10 or post 71 Muncie will mount the shifter a little further back. You just have to find the right shifter mounting plate to put the shifter in the right location .

I have a 3 speed Saginaw with mounting plate on it out of a 74 Ventura Sprint. Will that mounting plate work? Thanks Steve

I almost forgot, there is a picture of the original mounting plate on my Saginaw 4 speed. If you need any measurements of the holes or anything just let me know.

Hi John, thanks for the picture of the mounting plate. The plate on my 3 speed looks to be the same. In my 74 the 4 speed shifter is farther back from the original hole. The previous owner cut the floor to make it work. The tranny is a 65 Muncie. I am wanting to put the shifter location back to original location. What mounting plate do you think I need ? Steve
