Here is the alternator bracket off of a '63 Lemans with a 326 V8 engine.

It bolts to the RF cylinder head with three 3/8" diameter bolts.

As long as you have heads on your engine that have bosses tapped and threaded in them for 3/8" X 16 bolts.

You do not say if your car has power steering but if so You would need a WP pulley with 2 grooves.

Photo #4 is the bracket before removal from the engine.

The bracket is for sale if you think you can make it work; it is complete with all of the bolts. (You would need to add your own alternator.)

I’ve already purchased a bracket off eBay that I was told by the seller that it would do the job but the pulley on the alternator is way too far forward. I have the two groove pulleys bc I have ps. Somethings wrong, not sure if it’s the bracket or something else. See pics

Will take pics of mine tomorrow.I have the same bracket.Tom

Alternator pulley is about 2” toward the front.

DiamondJim 03-29-2020 10:23 PM

Two groove crank pulley and two groove water pump pulley line up perfectly and power steering pulley lines up with front most groove and generator was in rear groove of pulleys, with this bracket the alternator is too far forward, at least 1-1/2", could I have the wrong alternator? Alternator is a GM that fits small block and big block Chevy, one wire 150 amp.

From what I can see your pulley on the WP the depth of that puts both grooves too far to the rear.

You need to change the WP pulley to one that the 2 grooves are not as far rearwards.

You may need to get another double pulley for your crankshaft, perhaps one from a 63 or 64 Pontiac V8 engine. That may reach out more towards the radiator.

The other groove would be for the alternator. It could be because you have the 4 bolt WP. I know there are 8 bolt Water pumps but those fit a newer timing cover. Perhaps the 8 bolt WP reaches closer to the radiator?

Stock two groove crank pulley and two groove water pump pulley line up perfectly and power steering pulley lines up with front groove. If I change crank and WP pulleys out then PS won’t work.

The '62 a/c cars with alternator had the same pulleys & brackets as the '63 Pontiacs. As pointed out, your water pump pulley grooves are too far rearward. You'll have to find a power steering pump bracket that brings the pulley 2" forward. If you have trouble finding the right parts, PM me.

A Powermaster original appearance one wire alternator should bolt right into the original brackets and use original pulleys. When I added A/C to a 61 I sourced original late 61 or all 62 mountings and pulleys for A/C and Gen (all pulleys were different) and mounted a Powermaster in with no problems. But the belt lengths will change as the Powermaster pulley is not stock gen size.

Is there a spacer behind the wp pulley?

tom s 03-30-2020 04:06 PM

No,spacer behind any of the factory stuff.I did this car about 12 years ago and swapped out the 389 for a 421 a couple years ago and everything went on with no issue as I remember.I can take close ups of where the water pump pully is in relation to the water pump.PM me a cell number and can text them.Tom

Maybe I'm just lazy ;) but if your car still has the generator setup and it's still working, I don't think there's any great reason to go through the time and expense of converting to an alternator. Unless you've added a big radio or some other accessory that draws a lot of power it should be okay. I've never had any issues with generators, and if there is a problem 9 times out of 10 all they need is a set of brushes and new bearings.

Radiator has small leak so I planned to replace with aluminum with electric fan. I like the one wire alternators. All of my vehicles are resto mod but still have Pontiac engines.
