TA gauge issues

We bought a GM AC Delco sending unit and tested 3 gauges all do the same thing. The oil gauge is ok but....

When you turn the key on the temp gauge slowly starts going up and pegs at 260 or would keep going until it completely pegs out at the hot side of the gauge , but the engine isn’t even hot yet. Then when we turn it off the needle don’t go back unless you manually do it. the grounds are good!

Perhaps this link will assist you.I'm chasing an oil pressure gauge problem myself

Thank you! My oil is fine, it’s the temp that is being a PITA!! when car is started the temp gauge slowly goes over and buries itself at 260 and the engine is still cold, then the needle don’t go back when shut off.

Have you checked the circuit board in the back of the cluster. If you are using an older circuit board there could be a break in the copper board. I had to run a jumper wire to get my gauge to work properly from a break in the board.

It has a grounding issue. If you have just replaces the sender, check the wire is making a good contact and don't use Teflon tape.

What does it do with the sending unit wire un-plugged from the sender under the hood?

To piggy back off the other post without making my own has anyone had any experiences with the tach being way off? I might be going at best 3500 rpm on the freeway and it's showing about 6k on the tach

You need to go ahead and start a different thread since it's a tach problem instead of temp gauge.

Check 5th and 8th digits of your VIN. Your car may have started life as a base firebird with a V6.

Please start a thread on your tach subject as not to mix yours with mine!

Thanks.

Thank you that is very informative!! But Mike did do most everything mentioned. :) I used to be a member on that site but at one point sold my 75 TA and didn’t go back. Now I have another and I forgot my log in info.

i didnt want to post on your wanted ad... but if you tested 3 other gauges & they all did the same thing, its highly unlikely all 3 gauges were bad. there is something else going on causing the issue whether its grounds or a bad printed circuit or the wiring etc. sorry i dont have an answer as its hard to diagnose things like this over the internet, but im guessing its not gauge related so buying a new gauge may be a waste of money. hope you figure it out!
