Correct PS belt
 

Does anyone still make a power steering belt in the correct 15/32" top width?
Everything I'm finding is 3/8" wide. I suspect that's why my old one is squeaking. I can replace it with the same thing and it will probably be ok for a while but if the correct width is at all available, I'd rather have one of that width.
Most of the ones I'm shopping don't even list the width. I found a NOS one on ebay and after almost a month of waiting, the guy emailed me to say that he couldn't find it! :argue:

The 15/32 top width would be listed at 0.47" (15/16 = 0.4687) .... I see a ton of them there, not sure if they are the right length/depth though.

I've noticed the belt listings aren't accurate. The old number system by far was easiest. So if you have ac it is 53 inch long ? Then 15/32 is width, and 53.0 the length. It would be a part number of 15530 . you should be able to cross that to current part numbers. If not available try 1/2 increments in length. So 15535 or 15525. I looked one up at oreilly auto. It list a gates 7525 asv7/16 wide 53 long.

Thanks for that link. I may be able to find one using just the measurements. 53" is the length. 9789939 is the number of the one I attempted to buy and is the number in the FSM.

I will look into the 15530. The one that always pops up at parts stores that I go to is the Gates 15525. I bought one and didn't realize until I got it home that it was the same one I already had on the car. It was too 3/8" when I measured it. You are correct 69lemans, the 'book' specs aren't accurate. I can find that belt listed online at 2 or 3 different widths, including 15/32" but the two I have had in my hand are dead on 3/8"....3/32" is quite a discrepancy and the belt rides lower in the V as it wears. It has started to squeal.
I could probably just put another 15525 and quiet it back down for while but if I'm going to do it I may as well try to find the correct size.

Try a 17525 then . It might ride a little high. I suspect v belt part numbers are being consolidated like radiator hoses. They make one that covers several applications. It's going to be like 14 or even 15 inch tire selection. No demand.

I have some nos belts but wouldn't attempt to run them. They've been folded for 50 years. In my experience a cogged belt grips better. It's possible the pulleys are worn and or slick.

Yeah, the slick pulley is a possibility. I have been doing some other things in the area and cleaned up the engine compartment. Still, it brought the narrow belt to my attention and I'll change it. The 17525 is good idea. I can probably put one of those in my hands at the parts counter and measure it. If they run narrow like the others, it may be just right.

Yep I wouldn't worry about 1/32" difference ... but 3/32" smaller would be a no go.

Aren't there a ton of 1/2" belts out there? Seems like that would work for 15/32".

I haven't looked but yeah, probably would work. I'll get a few numbers and take my machinists rule with me.

I always use the cogged PS belt for Silent Running.

The only difference in that one and the recommended one is the column labeled 'Section'. The recommended one is 'HC41' and the one I'm looking at replacing it with is 'HC50'. Anyone know what that means? Maybe just a by-product of the increased width?

EDIT-After some largely fruitless searching, I think it may mean 'High Capacity'. I guess it's just a little heavier duty than the HC41.. Angle, length and width are right though so I may give it a try.

Do you have AC? I'm going to need a PS in a couple of weeks .... let me know if that belt works for you and I'll get one ... if you have AC that is, I think they are different.

I did an AC delete on mine but still an AC car. I'll update.

In the MPC revised 8-75 i have found #1375404 1/2" x 53" belt for the 1968-69 PS pump w/AC.
i would use Gates 9530 or 9525.

The pictures show a cogged belt.

O'Reilley's has it. Cogged on the pulley side, smooth outer.
One word of caution if ordering one...I have a feeling that some of them are green. Heavy Duty industrial type apps or something.
i just ordered one from Amazon and saw others below, like they always show, and some of them appeared to be green or mentioned 'Green Stripe'.

Gates belts w/o suffix HD is black.
