Thermostat location?
 

I'm looking for confirmation on where the thermostat is installed.

I have a 1966 sprint 6, does the thermostat go first, then the by-pass spacer, then neck?

***OR***

By-pass spacer, thermostat, then the neck?

1966 WITH BYPASS
 

From the 66 tempest shop manual, the only image i can find shows flow direction from the by-pass to the pump. Now according to the image you sent and other similar images i have seen shows the thermostat installed first. So in that configuration and by looking at the shop manual this means that the pump is drawing fluid from the top of the radiator, correct?

This is why I am asking what seems to be a silly question.

The pump pulls cool water from the radiator & stuffs it into the block.
The Thermostat actually resides in the Cam cover.

I always have installed the thermostat in the bypass housing on a 66-68 OHC-6 engine, the purpose of the bypass housing is to have a small flow of coolant bypass the thermostat and keep some fluid moving at all times, Putting it before the bypass housing defeats the purpose I think. I have always thought the illistration was wrong in the manual.

But who knows I may have done it wrong for 40 years!

What good does the bypass do if it's "after" the thermostat?

You know Jeff I should have caught that, but swung and missed ;)

The recessed Thermostat seat in the Cam House is for non-use of a By-Pass, but PMD realized the need to get a small amount of Coolant to flow before full warm-up.
This is why they used the By-Pass.

The By-Pass also has a recessed seat for the thermostat which is re-located to allow a small amount of flow before the Thermostat reaches operating temp (OPENS).

So the sequence is Cam House, Gasket, By-Pass, Thermostat, Gasket, Outlet.

You would think I could recite this stuff by now :rolleyes:

I've been beating my head against the wall on this stupid little issue... on one hand I have the manual saying one thing, illustrations showing another.

THANK YOU for showing the correct way, and confirming what I thought to be correct.

Time to tear down and reinstall.
