I whooped a hemi w/ my jeep

yesterday, I was following my friend to another friends house.
My friend has the dodge pickup, 4wd, with the 392(?) hemi that he said puts out 375 hp or something, maybe 390 hp i'm not sure.
I was driving my beater, '03 jeep liberty w/ the 3.7 v6. 4wd.

I pulled next to him at the light...it turned green and I nailed it. He couldn't catch me before the next two lights.
I figured this was a fluke ... at the next light we laughed and smiled.
the light turned green and I nailed it. I heard his tires chirp so I knew it was on.
By 55 mph I had about 6 car lengths on him.
I held on to the lead until about 75 mph then he passed me easily.
We were both pretty shocked.
The 3.7 jeeps are said to be underpowered, from what I've read.
I know it's not apples to apples but I did expect a lot more from the dodge.
He would have just nosed ahead in the 1/4 mile I don't know but it was close.

Good to know, sounds like the Jeep can tow.

F ROCK 02-17-2020 09:12 AM

Yeah the 3.7 screamed but I just looked up the dodge and while it's way more powerful it's also 1400lbs heavier. Wow.
I knew it was heavier but didn't think it was that much; so that explains things I guess.

Chase is a race! :D

wow, sounds pretty exicting!

But a new Hemi will beat you at tearing up its camshaft as well as the roller lifters are failure prone.

grandam1979 02-18-2020 05:14 PM

Sounds like your friend can’t drive

Lamest race in the history of man!

Safety monitor to the rescue..

Define "irresponsible" and the conditions that make it irresponsible.

I have a 390 hp hemi in my Ram, standard cab, short bed (Express version) and a 3.9 rear gear. My son has a 3.7 Jeep with stick shift....while it is not slow by any means, there is absolutely no way it would be a close race with my hemi even though it has 150k miles on it.. I've had several of these over the years and they have been extremely reliable.

Maybe an illegal street race!

75MPH and spirited driving is irresponsible? Do you ever leave the farm? Where I live, the posted speed limits are suggested speeds. The general traffic speed when going to work is 80-85 MPH on 60-70MPH posted roads. The slow lane does 70 and you best not get out in that high speed lane not doing 80-85. I run 80MPH and many cars/4-wheeled bullies will zip right past me or try and push me down the road 2 feet off my bumper. The troopers run 75-80, and faster sometimes, and everyone keeps right up with them and they just keep on peddling it. Maybe its because this is Nascar country, I don't know. The local roads are typically 35MPH. We do 55 on those.

Owning a car having horsepower means exercising it. You gotta blow out the carbon or it runs poorly. Why own a 400, 500, 600HP car only to drive it 55MPH, 60MPH, 70 MPH? And if you have any testosterone left, when some guy comes up along side and challenges you to see what's under the hood, you'd be a weenie just to smile and wave like a goober with 400, 500, 600 HP under the hood. Pull up along side me and challenge me, I'm going for it. And this kind of thinking got me into a race in my youth with an unmarked 5.0 Mustang. He popped his lights on when we hit 95MPH and I was still climbing. Big ticket, but what a memory. Irresponsible? Him taunting and racing me, or me racing him?

Either you get it or you don't. Nothing like a good street race in the morning to get your day started.

It would appear that he is likely a weenie without testosterone LOL Probably intimidated by my jeep lol.

Right on.

Anybody whining about a little race to 75 mph and saying that's irresponsible must be a millennial,,,,lol. Safety first! Ever watch on youtube millennial dad VS baby boomer dad? Too funny but true. Yep..Im a proud boomer and had my snowmobile 108 mph gps on the lake this week. Crazy stuff..haha. Just poking fun,,dont get your panties in a wad. My work truck is a 2017 dodge with the 5.7 hemi and Im not impressed.

It’s a man thing :D

Or a Woman thing, I did something similar with my Challenger with a guy in a Mustang cobra at a light and nothing but road ahead of us. No cars in the on coming lanes. :bump2: sometimes ya just know when it’s right to play.

TAKerry 02-20-2020 10:10 AM

Let me start by saying this is all in good fun. Dont want to get anything locked down!
I just turned 56 so no, I am not a millennial. I dont own an electric car, am not a LEO and I still have to get up and go to work every morning. Testosterone, well that is def. in question as I have been married for well over 30 years now and...………..
Weenie, I guess that could apply, I played in the high school band so I guess that counts, lol.
I do enjoy having fun with cars and motorcycles. I have ridden my trusty old Roadking literally all over the country. Always have made it back in one piece. One of the reasons I try to follow traffic laws when possible. Not saying I dont or have never sped down the highway. I live right along I95 and travel it regularily between philly and dc, and yes, if you go the posted you most likely will get hit.
I enjoy going to the drag strip and watching the races. My brother races motorcycles and I enjoy that aspect as well. I just think that to be respectful to the majority of drivers on the road that it is selfish and immature to race just because you can. I know I am in the minority here but personally I see no sense in owning a car that has 500+ horsepower to go back and forth to the grocery store. You mentioned nascar country so I suppose the opposite is the effect that I feel. I cannot drive the 15 miles to the next town without seeing at least half a dozen cops on the road just waiting to pull someone over.
I hope we can all enjoy some happy motoring today, and this weekend its supposed to be warm enough for me to get my 300hp trans am out of the garage for some 55mph fun!

Firedup6975 02-20-2020 10:20 AM

Yep always safety first, no high speeds for me, we just pulled out a little muscle from the light a few feet just to hear the awesome sounds these two cars make. :D hell I’m 63 hardly a street outlaw, but I do like to live it up a little bit.

TAKerry 02-20-2020 10:35 AM

My wife has a new mustang, not challenger fast but it is fast. SHE drives like nascar, and y'all know by now how I drive. She calls me an old man.
