66 Gto fan shroud

3 Attachment(s)
finally after 22 yrs, got around putting a fan clutch on my car...........i have the ames 15 1/2 shroud plastic one...........have a gap at the top, think i can put something over that , but on the bottom of the shroud the blades are all the way inside...........not sure how you can fix this.

Anyone else run into this, and what they did to fix it.

The fan clutch is a hayden 2747 HD, and the fan is a 7 blade from ames

Thanks

Rich

lol...............wondering how "Ames" stays in business.............guess im the only one that has bought a shroud from them...........nobody has nothing to add.

64speed 06-06-2022 08:05 PM

The shroud is for the small radiator, you have the big radiator. I noticed that immediately

gtorich 06-07-2022 09:32 AM

Hey 64, thanks for the reply...........the radiator is a champion, i ordered the shroud because i have the 15 1/2 support.............will have to check if the bigger shroud would fit.

Checked with "Ames"..........said i couldnt use the bigger shroud with my 15 1/2 core.

Thanks

Not quite sure what's going on here. Although my car is not an apples-to-apples comparison since I have an A/C car with the tall radiator/core support, my fan shroud has a "cutout" where the radiator hose is located, which then allows the shroud to come up to the bottom edge of the top tank and not leave any fins exposed like we are seeing with your car.

What's the part number for your shroud?

Here is a photo of the shroud in my car before restoration.

Karl, good to hear from you..........The part # is P151A and i have the 15 1/2 core support.........The rad is a champion alum one.........my car is no air.....the tech from "Ames" said the P152A is for the 17 1/2 core support and wont physically fit in my car......im wondering on the mounting holes for the two shrouds are different.........also wondering if this has some effect on the fitment of my shroud, when i bought the car, the PO cut those fins off where you mount the shroud, i tried to make new fins, doesnt look bad, but i could be off some. lol.............let me get you some measurments of the shroud later

Rich

ZeGermanHam 06-07-2022 05:37 PM

Measure the height of the finned radiator core while you're in there.

As an aside, it looks like the hose "cutouts" in the shroud are only an A/C car thing, which explains why your shroud doesn't have them. Regardless, I'm curious about the height of your radiator core.

gtorich 06-07-2022 06:22 PM

Thanks Karl, i will try to get these tomorrow, just hard to measure when everyting is in the way..........

Ok, Karl, for just the finned area on the champion rad looks like 17 3/4........rad width is 25, and the shroud is 27

The opening of my shroud is about 20 inches.............wonder if i could use the a/c fan shroud............but ames says no.

ZeGermanHam 06-07-2022 07:41 PM

With a 17-3/4" radiator core height, that certainly explains why your non-A/C shroud does not cover the entire radiator. Your radiator is considerably taller than would would normally come in a non-A/C car. The radiator height should be 15-1/2". But since you have a taller radiator installed already, I bet there is a way that you can get the 17-1/2" A/C shroud to fit. You might have to drill some holes in the shroud, but that's easy.

Maybe others here have additional info to the contrary, but I can't think of a reason why the larger shroud wouldn't fit with the larger radiator that you have.

gtorich 06-07-2022 07:51 PM

I hear ya Karl..............i tried to explain to the "Ames" tech on what im wanting to try, he insisting you cannot use the larger fan shroud...........i told him i have a aftermarket rad, his answer was it doesnt matter, this shroud will not fit.............hoping to hear from some people that have dont this...............just hate to buy another shroud, and bigger fan to boot, and find out this isnt gonna work. lol

Rich

ZeGermanHam 06-07-2022 07:57 PM

The Ames folks are pretty knowledgeable, so they might have a good reason for saying that it won't fit. Don't take my word as the definitive answer, but given how the shroud mounts to the core support, I don't know what would prevent you from getting the larger shroud and simply drilling new mounting holes to place it where you want it to be.

Curious to hear what other folks here have to say on the matter.

Rich, I bought a Champion Radiator, PN CC1680, when I built my run stand thinking I might use it in the car later on. It is a 15.5 core & spec'd for 600 HP. I do not think I will use this radiator, at least for for the foreseeable future. If you have any interest I will box it up and ship it to you to see if that corrects the issue you are having, if it does maybe we can work out a swap for your taller one. Just let me know.

Hey Mike, checking with a buddy on his other radiator..........would be a great trade Except with all my screwing around with the shroud, i got quite a few fins messed up. lol

I"ll send you a pm

Might be good to point out that while you do have less cooling than the tall radiator set at stock height with the larger shroud and fan, you still have the same cooling capacity through the non-A/C shroud as a shorter aluminum radiator and your current fan. Figure the additional 2" of fins above the shroud won't do you any good at slow speed, but should be of some additional benefit at freeway speeds over the shorter radiator.

You have the tall rad with the 2" shorter core support ? That would make the rad sit 2" taller then the support & require a custom top rad holder & hood would hit the rad. Is the bottom of the core modified ?

15 in radiator

Just as a reference, this is my stock shroud for a non AC car with a Cold Case 15in core radiator. Looks the same to me. I thought this was just how they fit.

lust4speed 06-23-2022 01:55 PM

Seems like we are unsure what parts you have.

What is the distance between the bottom and top tanks - 15-1/2 or 17-12?

Does the bottom of the radiator support look like an upside down U or is there a squared off trough that the radiator sits in sort of like this |_| ?
