SWITCH, Solenoid
 

The starter motor “Solenoid” switch used on the 64,65,66,67 GTO came in two varieties.

The standard 4bbl. and optional Tri-Power used the 1114356 switch with the Bakelite cap.

The 1967 HO/RA came equipped with the 1114348 switch with the Metal cap.
Known as the “348” version. This unit was also used on the later RA/SD cars.

Obviously a more brutal construction to handle the heat generated by the Larger cast iron exhaust manifolds.

One of these “348” units just sold on auction for a hefty price.

I didn't know about these - I knew there were different solenoids, and I have had my share of issues with solenoids that would heat soak.
I wonder if these can be rebuilt...

An astute member emailed me asking if the two different solenoids were a different length.

The metal cap on the “348” is shorter, but overall length with the threaded studs are the same on both.

The metal heat shield came on the HO/RA cars, so I recommend this on any GTO.

Seriously in all my years I have never seen one of those solenoids with the metal end cap, only the plastic/bakelite end cap ones.
I wonder if any other GM divisions used the metal one?

I took some pictures of my solonoid when I was working in that area . Mine is the 1114348 with the heavy duty starter 1108353 . I think this starter only was used in the 67-69 ho ram air cars . I could be wrong though. My car is a 67 gto ho

In the 1970 Pontiac Service Manual i find the Ram-Air #1108436 starter using #1144366 solenoid.
This starter and solenoid is found in the 1971-74 Service Manuals for H.O./R.A, and S.D. engines.
Makes me think #1114348 is a service replacement unit?
Also, the solenoid #1114458 cannot be found in the Service Manuals.

Replacement is correct
