Hurst motor mounts for my 55
I cannot seem to find the answer so I will ask the experts. I am going to transplant a 1970 400 into my 1955 Chieftain. My question is will any of the Hurst motor mounts work or just specific ones? Thanks for any suggestions or sharing your knowledge.

As far as I know Hurst mounts were made to mount a specific engine in a specific car, so you'd have to find the right model. I suppose you could build Hurst style mounts to fit your specific needs.

Here's a 4 page thread outlining putting a 428 in a 57 Pontiac, your car is comparable to this swap:
http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=559390 The alternative method would be to fabricate custom mounts from the frame to the late model side mounts and install a rear crossmember to support the rear of the T 400. Speedway motors sells a rear crossmember kit that is a cut to fit your application. Since there were no T400 applications when Hurst made those swap kits I really don't think you're going to find one especially for your application. Bill Eveland in the thread I linked to has a 55 Chieftain gasser with a 455 in it, you might PM him to see if he has any suggestions on how to make the transition. |

The only reason the Hurst mount existed was the lack of front mount provisions on pre-'59 Pontiac blocks. I don't see any point in using a Hurst mount for the post-'59 blocks. |

Thanks for replying everyone.

I have the 2nd style Hurst engine mount for a side engine mount. But i already had the frame set up from using the first style from a 389.

Is this the second type?

That's the original type, intended for '55-58 engines.

I used that type originally on my 66 389 I put a 60 cover on. There is a lower bracket from a 55-58 front mount that should be used with that also. This is the 2nd style

A lower bracket that is already on my 55? I have the original engine and transmission still in my car. I have the Hurst engine mount I posted, and the type 2 seem to be hard to find. Unfortunately, my mechanical skills seem to be lacking.

Seems like 'most any metal fabrication shop could make up mounts similar to those later-version Hurst mounts. |
