Electric choke power source
 

I am installing an electric choke on a Carter AFB on a 1966 Grand Prix. Can I use the battery side of the coil for my 12 volt power source?

I wouldn't use the resistance wire going to coil (+).

Hot wire for the wiper motor cuts off and on with the ignition switch.

Safer to use a relay to power the choke.

Or if your car has one, the IGN terminal on the fusebox.

Fuse block does not have an IGN terminal. It does have two spare unfused circuits, one of which is has what looks like a condenser attached to it (to prevent radio interference??)and the other is available. But the available circuit is always on (even when the ignition switch is off) and I do not think that is what I want - I only want the choke to be powered when the ignition switch is on.

Goatracer1 - can you provide some more details on the relay you suggest?

It does look as if the suggestion to tie into the windshield wiper/washer hot wire is a solution.

I have used the wiper hot wire in the past and it works fine

I use any of the small black relays. When I'm in the junk yard i'll get a 1/2 dozen of them along with the plug and several inches of wire. Or you can buy one at any parts store. Connect a fused battery feed, output to choke coil and ground wire. You can then use any trigger source that is live with the key on. Even the resistor wire to the coil because it takes less than 12 volts and almost no amps to trigger the relay. Used these for years.
