curious ; 462 in a 70's GMC ? Any one completed one ?
I'm curious about the possibility of installing a 462 in a truck ? I have a 462 going to dyno it next week and I would like to have a pick up . I don't have anything to put it in as of yet . JUST THINKING !!!

It can certainly be done. Starter is on the wrong side vs chevy, use a bop to chevy trans adapter. Usually just use the engine mount off the frame of a car to go and set the engine down into the chassis with the motor mounts on. I even know 2 guys that have put 455 pontiacs in 70s 4x4 FORD pickups, one has ram air manifolds and the new process 4 speed from the ford 300 6 behind the 450 hp 455.
This thread had some good details for a swap for a 2wd. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=596830 |
I installed a 455 Pontiac in a 1963 Chevy 1/2 ton 2wd. If you use the correct parts it's a bolt in. Removed 6 cyl. mounts. Used the U-shaped steel Pontiac upper motor mounts from a 1970's Pontiac and the Z-shaped steel piece from a mid 1970's Chevy/GMC 2wd pickup that runs from the top of the frame to the front cross member. I also used the rubber lower mount that was already on the Chevy Steel piece. It fits the Pontiac upper u-shaped mount. Everything that I used was bolted in the two vehicles so no cutting or welding is required. Bolt everything to your Pontiac engine and lower it into the frame of the truck. Mark the frame rails and the cross member where the Z-shaped pieces sit and drill new mounting holes. I used a BOP Turbo 400 and everything cleared. You will have to move/change trans cross member. Good luck. If truck has PS use the pump and brackets from your engine. Stock exhaust manifolds fit fine. I don't know about headers.

we put a 400 Pontiac into a 58 chevy 2wd truck in the 70's... seems it went in pretty easily as I remember. Ran like a beast..

Swap candidate right here: https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...d.php?t=817991
I have a friend who swapped well-built 462 into a ‘69 Chevy 3/4 ton long bed pickup, it was a nice fit and man did that truck ever move out. |
My sister has a 455 in a ‘70 GMC and our dad is currently building a 428 to put in his ‘68 GMC. No real problem for either one. I posted these pics before. Not sure it ever got done by the factory though.

I installed a 71 400 in my 74 2500 2 wd truck back in 80. Used frame mounts redrilled frame. Used longer battery cables, stock oil filter. Stock log manifolds, qjet, long tailshaft 65 turbo hydro with convertor out of 65 Cat. Cut driveshaft.used stock column shifter, needed adjusting as I couldnt manually get low. I dont remember radiator fan and hoses.Worked fine for my work truck everyday leaving in drive.World of difference hauling torque.
