Subjective value question - non original blocks
 

My GP convertible project will be starting up next year. My poor GP is a mess, but I have been dragging it around since 1983 when I bought it for $750, and it will return to the road. The car will be restored, but not to original spec. That is the basis of my question.

If I am not restoring the car to original drive train spec (400/auto), does it matter to future value if I am using a "correct" WG code 428HO, or a SR 428HO block? I already have a complete 428HO SR engine, and access to a +0.060" over 1967 WG HO block and crank.

I have no delusions that I am going to see any "profit" from this car other than enjoying it configured as I would have ordered it. It's just that "correct" 1967 WG HO blocks do not come up for sale too often, so if I am going to pull that trigger, might as well do it now. When the estate gets settled in (hopefully) 30+ years down the road, will it matter?

Does the car still have its original engine? If so, I suppose you could stick it under the workbench and save it for the next owner. Otherwise, it sounds like you'll be upgrading the powertrain and that would add value in my opinion.

if the car is an original H O car it might be worth having a "correct" HO block even if it's not original to the car but if the car wasn't an HO then just use the most cost effective block and heads to build the engine performance you want and sell the higher value block.

The car does not have its original engine, which was just a standard 400 with 143 heads and a Carter AFB carb. Never was an HO car, so I agree that putting in a "correct" HO block is not really a determinant in future value.

The SR block I have is from a '68 Bonneville convertible that was an original HO 428 car. It has no markings on the front left of the block. Block was replaced in the early 70s. I have to check the date code again, but I think it was cast in '72. #16 heads and correct HO carb are still on it.
