Need a 68 gas gauge....rebuilding dash and the old one is rough....

I also have a spare I can part with but won’t be able to get to it until this COVID thing is over. . . .

I am pretty sure I have a nice one and can look it up this evening and report back to you. Is an F body the same as an A body for this gage ? Pretty sure what I have is out of a 68 Firebird. Please PM me if you are still in need.

I've become quite an expert in '68 dashes having taken mine apart 4 or 5 times in the last few months to get my gauges and dash dialed in. I dreaded that project for months, but I've done it so many times I feel like I could do it in an hour now.

I'd bet most of the used gauges you'll find will be aged and the marks will be discolored to some degree. I thought my original was in perfect condition until I looked closer, you can see how it's discolored compared the gauge face. For whatever reason the smaller fuel, oil and temp gauges seem to discolor faster than the faces. You may consider having Pete Serio restore your original depending on your expectations.

I have a plan in my head to bench test my whole dash unit before installing it .... hook up the fuel sending unit, temp sensor, oil pressure sensor .... whatever I can. Try to power it up and check as much as I can .... is this possible?

According to the box I have mine in, it was removed from a 1968 Firebird, it is really nice but does not appear to be correct for your application and does not match Pete's photos. Sorry I was not able to help you out.

I've had mine out, I think, three times. The last time I put it back in when everything was just as I wanted it cosmetically, the tach suddenly was reading about 1/4 the actual speed. I just didn't want to take it back out again and it's still off by that much to this day.

I don't know about the dash as a whole, but you could certainly check the gauges and the light circuit individually with a 12v source. I bench tested my fuel gauge by wiring it up directly to the battery and adding an extra fuel sending unit in line.

Luckily I'm just dealing with idiot lights. Would be nice if I could power up the entire dash from a single 12V input ... but I'm sure it's got a different power wire for every function. I'll probably get blisters from the alligator clips.
