Clutch repair on west coast
 

To old to repair my 63 Lemans. Looking for a reputable clutch shop that knows how to repair/replace clutch near San Diego area. Any suggestions?

4yl or V8? Do you have any replacement parts? You can get the clutch friction disk relined. What is it doing right now? Chatter? Not releasing?

I am in Encinitas.

Since you are in Oceanside, stop by http://www.oceanside-driveline.com/ and ask them. They probably won't do it, but they will no someone competent in Oceanside. They are a really well-respected driveline shop and know a lot of local mechanics.

The Differential and Axle shop in Escondido. Not sure if they do clutches but give them a call.

Well, that is the question isn't it!

I doubt that any "commercial" shop is going to have someone that has done/knows how to do this work.

I suggest you take a factory shop manual with you to show to mechanic how to do it, paying close attention to instruction on how the flex driveshaft is handled..

Also, I suggest that the driveshaft bearings are replaced at the same time as the clutch work is done. (Bearings are (may be?) available from "Chiefkey" on this forum.)

D-Mac is a true Pontiac guy. I raced in the Pontiac Drag Days bracket race series from 1993 through 2002 and Dennis was a participant. He would be the guy I’d recommend to repair your ‘63 Le Mans.

DMAC is retired. And his partner who took over the shop prefers working on Honda's for money these days.

My 63 Lemans is the 336ci. Thank you all so much for your info. I did get a set of driveshaft bearings from Chief when his first production run was done and I did have Oceanside Driveline remove the old bearings and replace with new. That's all the work he cared to do on the 63. I've put 500 miles on the new clutch that a "reputable" Oceanside shop did before it fried. I did supply them an original service manual. It took them 3 months (parts) and $1500 later I'm looking for a shop that knows these unique cars. This car is the exact duplicate of one that I bought in Portsmouth, N.H. in 1966. Got drafted and had to sell it. Found this one in 2012 and cherished every moment in it. Against THANK to all that replied. I will pursue all leads.

You say it fried in 500 miles. What signs make you think that is the case?

Hate to say it BUT almost impossible to find anyone to work on one unless they own one.IMO doing a clutch on these things is one of the hardest thing I have ever done in the 55 plus years I have owned them and I have a lift!Good luck with your project.Tom

Let the clutch out like a responsible driver then pushed the accelerator to the floor. Smoked the tires. The undeniable smell of burning clutch and red line at 4600 rpm. Major slipping.The installer told me there is no further adjustment left. I was never pleased with the installation. Took it back several times. This shop had no experience with the 63's. I will continue my search until I croak!

OK, I did some inquiring.

This is San Diego's only clutch specific shop (that I know about)... Supposedly the last stop on problem jobs. The owner of Moreland Choppers recommended them.

I know it has been a long time since this was posted, but I have not been able to find another S4 B7 Clutch DIY. With a few exceptions, the pictures are not showing up. Do you still have any of these photos, and if so, are you willing to email them to me? Thanks.
