Dash lights

My dash lights, all of them quite working. The small fuse for panel and ash tray is good. When I turn on the headlights there is power across the fuse, and to the brown or purple wire is attached to the fuse block. All instrument lights are out. Gauges work. Interior lights work. They dim and full bright. Brake , turn ,running , front turn , headlights work. Got any suggestions. Thanks John

I'm in the same boat.

The common point for all of the dash lights will be the rheostat on the headlight switch. Try rotating it clockwise and counter clockwise. You may be able to find a spot where they work, or clean off the crud so that they work at more than one spot. If that doesn't work you will need a new headlight switch, or a high wattage fixed resistor to bypass the rheostat on the switch.

Well, I gave the switch, which was really dirty and dusty, a bath in electronic cleaner. I put it back in and there is one spot that the dash lights work. I guess it's time to search for a new switch. Higgenslake take it out and give it a bath with cleaner. Might get lucky. Know how to get it out? John

You can clean the rheostat with some fine black oxide sandpaper. I also use a pair of needle nose pliers to tweak the contact so it puts more pressure on the rheostat windings.

I have a extra 1963 Tempest headlamp switch. It looks to be in good shape.

Yes, I have a NOS 1995138 ready to install.

Put in a new used switch all lights work fine. Thanks for the info.
