Buick dyno results - Pontiac related

Back in about 2013 I was talking to John Marcella at the Pontiac race in Norwalk. He told me a bit about a Buick port he developed for Scott Brown.
At the same race I noticed the really unassuming first gen. Firebird with the big guy in the hawaiian shirt making some impressive runs.

Soon thereafter I became friends Mike Leech and Scott Brown as we started building my new engine. Being a Buick nothing happened as quickly as I would have hoped but the wait proved worth it two Fridays ago.

The dyno results far exceeded my expectations. This is basically the last recipe from Mike's engine plugged into an aluminum TA Performance Buick block.

There were some subtle differences in the foundation and I didn't expect to "match" Mike's last results in my first try. But we proved once again what a badass combo that was brewed up by Scott,John and MIke.

Now hopefully I can do this thing justice on the track.

Very cool! How about a little more info, bore, stroke, and what heads.

If you deal with Marcella and Scott Brown you are going to make big power. Wish I got to meet Mike. Just talked on the phone.
Scott has a lot of different engine things going on, very nice and interesting guy.

Nice build , Scott Brown is a great guy , I bought Mikes BOP intake after he broke the 7's at World Cup , Mike was going to help me with my new engine program with Marcella and Brown helping us get there , Marcella just finished up my heads n Redesigned BOP intake to match our new High Port Heads , now there in Scotts hands for our new max effort 93 pump gas nitrous build , This build is because of Mikes influence on helping reach my goals . HPTTFMF!

Nastyest NA BUICK Engine I have ever heard on a dyno run. Congrats.

Great results to say the least. Good job.

BruceWilkie 04-15-2018 04:16 PM

Nice! Goes to show that the Buick doesn't know it's a Buick...

Dragncar 04-15-2018 04:45 PM

Hey, Buicks had a better bore-stroke than a Pontiac for making power. Tell me you would like a 4.31 bore and a 3.9 stroke ? Block and oiling was holding them back. They could end up with more power than us.

Hahaha. A few friends have made that comment ... "It doesn't sounds like a Buick anymore".

Buicks have a 4.750 bore space so I went right to a 4.500 bore with this one. Stroke is 4.400 for 560 ci. The heads are TA Stage 2 Track Eliminator which are based on the late 60s iron Stage 2 from Buick.
The heads are very similar to Mike's in volume, size, etc.

Much to my amazement, My engine didn't peak until 8000. We pulled to 8200 on the last few.
Seeing as how far past my expectations the engine went we really didn't do much on the dyno after we found peak. We started at 28 degrees of timing, it liked 29, and then it liked 30.
I regret not trying 33-34 as most other NA Buicks have seen significant gains going from 30-ish to 33-34 but I decided to get it in the car and start learning to use it. Then I can look for improvement on the timeslip.

My car is 10" tire Skylark and with the aluminum block and some other updates, I'm hoping to hit the starting around 3200lbs ... I feel I can get more weight out without taking away from the "look" but I want to get a baseline first.

That is tremendous output from that engine. 2.0553 HP per inch!! Not sure if the Buick group has a "fastest or record book of sorts", but that has to be tops or right at the top for a Buick based engine. Congratulations.

Man, that's cool. BOPTTF.

Great power Gary and Beautiful car as well

Mike Davis 04-15-2018 08:18 PM

Always enjoy seeing Gary's car. Great numbers as well. But you know a few of those old nail head guys are gonna be giving you crap because it's not painted red and isn't a Stage 1.

When do plan on getting it out?

PAUL K 04-15-2018 10:05 PM

Great build Gary! Congratulations to all involved.

Gary Kubisch 04-15-2018 10:10 PM

Thanks Guys.

Mike, I'm hoping it doesn't take much longer to get track results but my work schedule is pretty crazy for the next 6-8 weeks. Hopefully it's not much past June.

Will you update us once you get some track time?
