manual steering on 79 firebird

how do i go about modifying the steering shaft on a 79 firebird to convert it manual steering... can i install one of those universal shafts with the two universal joints? or is there a better way. im sure somebody here has done it right?

My 79 Camaro I used I think a late 80s "4 bolt" S-10 manual box and Borgeson U joints.

I have the manual box now. But the rag joint and steering rod is one peice.

Yep they make a new rag rubber potion that bolts on to the old shaft. I used one of those on my 81 TA. I think I saw some guy maybe on a Camaro site that rebuilds the whole shaft. I just used a Borgeson double D end collapsible shaft with U joints on both ends on the 79 Camaro. The end on the column drill the hole larger to use the a through bolt like the factory did. Just got a longer metric for it.

what if i cut the current stock intermediate shaft where it thins out to 3/4...and use one of those aftermarket universals with the universal joints on them? woulth that work?
